uOttawa affirms world class status with Top 200 Times Higher Education ranking

OTTAWA, October 6, 2011  —  The University of Ottawa has been recognized in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings, joining the Top 200 for the first time. This accomplishment is truly the product of a University-wide effort. Faculty, support staff, students and alumni have contributed to the outstanding developments that are being made in building what can truly be called a world-class university.

These highly respected university performance rankings look at a very broad range of factors, including teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. The University of Ottawa is one of only nine Canadian universities to make the list.

The student experience continues to be one of the University’s top priorities. “The University of Ottawa must continue to give its students the best possible university experience and the necessary means to succeed, in a healthy, dynamic and positive environment,” said Allan Rock, University of Ottawa president.

In recent years, uOttawa has attracted some of the world’s leading researchers and graduate students, providing them with cutting edge facilities such as the Skills and Simulation Centre (based at The Ottawa Hospital), where present and future health professionals train on lifelike models, and the new Centre for Advanced Photonics and Environmental Analysis, one of the main centres of its type worldwide.

This support is creating a critical mass of researchers in key areas such as photonics, catalysis, regenerative medicine, neurosciences, arts and humanities. Our new ranking among the Top 200 confirms the impact of our researchers and their discoveries, and our place as a fertile breeding ground for the research leaders of tomorrow,” said Allan Rock.

Research activity has a tremendous impact on the student experience as a whole. Funding has recently been doubled for the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, which enables undergraduate students to work on projects alongside uOttawa research leaders. They will have exceptional opportunities to take part in work that has often been considered the preserve of graduate students. This will offer undergraduate students valuable experience that will certainly provide them with unique future opportunities.

In the next few weeks, uOttawa will launch its new strategic vision, which will allow the university to continue to prosper. This vision will not only enhance the experience of students, staff and faculty, but will have an impact on our broader region.
