Canada Research Chairs: $11 million for uOttawa

OTTAWA, October 12, 2011  —  The University of Ottawa is proud to announce the appointment of an impressive eleven new Canada Research Chairs and the renewal of two, totalling a significant $11 million in funding.

The latest appointed chairs will enhance the University of Ottawa’s breadth of research and expertise in areas such as environment, health and economic policy, viral infection and immunity, mental health, stem cell therapy, and business technology.

“Thanks to the Canada Research Chairs program, the University of Ottawa continues to create a unique concentration of brilliant researchers whose expertise and knowledge will benefit the health and livelihood of all Canadians,” said Mona Nemer, vice-president, research.

In recent years, the University of Ottawa has gained significant momentum in the quality and quantity of research carried out. Exemplary researchers, who have chosen the University of Ottawa as their home, have raised the bar in fields such as physics, positioning our institution among the very best photonics research centres in the world; religious studies, where unprecedented research is defining religious diversity and freedom in Canada; international security and governance, establishing a centre that is at the forefront of global governance and policy; Internet and intellectual property law, making uOttawa the most sought-after source on issues regarding e-commerce jurisdiction and Internet governance for governments and regulators; and cardiology, defining the way cardiovascular medicine is practiced.

Last March, the University of Ottawa saw an increase in its allocation of Canada Research Chairs as part of the federal government’s biennial distribution review. The increase was based on the level of research funding received by the University of Ottawa from the three federal granting agencies.

The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
