Les recherches du Dr. Cao ont porté sur le développement des minorités régionales en l'Asia et en Chine abordées sous deux axes : 1) Minorités ethniques, Mobilité et Urbanisation; 2) Disparités régionales et Accessibilité aux services sociaux. La majorité de sa recherche est fondée sur l'utilisation des méthodes géostatistiques et des Systèmes d'information géographique (SIG).
