Research information:
I have specialized in race relations/diversity and multiculturalism issues with experience in the federal government, the City of Ottawa (as Administrator focussing on ethnic diversity policy and program development) , and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), where for a decade I managed the national Race Relations Program. In this latter capacity, I interacted with municipal governments across Canada; I also coordinated a National Action Committee on Race Relations chaired at different intervals by elected officials such as the mayors of Toronto and Regina. I also served on the FCM team that organized the Board of Directors' quarterly meetings and Annual Conferences held across Canada. Under the FCM's auspices, my activities included ongoing interaction with Boards of Trade, Chambers of Commerce, Human Rights Commissions, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, ethnocultural and Native communities of different parts of Canada. I also prepared and presented briefs to Parliamentary Standing Committees on Immigration, etc.
Over the years I was involved in international development issues with focus on the Caribbean (taught school for nine years in the region and was involved in trade unions, and social and community activism).
As an author (poet, short story writer, novelist, anthologist and book critic) with numerous book publications, I was appointed the official Poet Laureate of Ottawa (1984-87). My work has appeared in over 60 literary periodicals, and I have published three key anthologies, namely: A Shapely Fire: Changing the Literary Landscape (Mosaic Press, Oakville, Ontario); Another Way to Dance: Contemporary Asian Poetry in Canada and the USA (TSAR Publications, Toronto); and Beyond Sangre Grande: Caribbean Writing Today (TSAR). My last novel, Drums of My Flesh (TSAR), won the top Fiction Prize in Guyana and was nominated for 2007 IMPAC/Dublin Literary Prize. I have done over 300 readings internationally. I also juried for Canada's Governor General's Award (poetry), America's Neustadt International Prize for Literature (via the University of Oklahoma), and the BOCAS/Caribbean Literary Prize.
Published op-ed and feature articles in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, the Ottawa Citizen, the Washington Times magazines, etc. Was regular book critic for The Ottawa Journal in the mid-seventies. I’ve done over a hundred book reviews published in a variety of newspapers and journals, including being a regular book reviewer for World Literature Today (University of Oklahoma).

I am an artist and a photographer. I have been teaching art for 22 years. I am current in the debates between traditional and digital photography as well as the role of photography in contemporary art practice. I have designed and supervised the operation of two digital photography labs, one for teaching groups and one for advanced digital techniques and large-format printing. I am interested in the predominance of women in art schools, and as photography students. I am concerned that this dominance at the educational level is superseded by a lack of presence and visibility in the art market, the museums and the commercial photography sectors. I also have experience in curriculum development as well as accreditation reviews with governmental and institutional regulation organizations. I am interested in the education of artists, and of art as an important education for members of society.
Area(s) of expertise:

I specialize in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. My experience as a part-time professor at the University has allowed me to be in contact with people of different ages and backgrounds. More than five years of experience teaching Spanish have shaped me as a teacher who can adapt different teaching methods to the specific needs of each student.
My education includes a master's degree in Spanish from the University of Ottawa and a Ph.D. in Spanish that I will get in spring 2013.
As private Spanish tutor, I had among my students, federal government employees, school students and retired adults who want to learn or improve their Spanish.
In my classes, I try to include as part of learning, the masterpieces of Hispanic American authors, Hispanic songs, newspaper articles and other materials that can improve the process of learning a new language.

I am mostly working on the French early modern philosophy, which means the thought of philosophers from the sixteenth (Montaigne), seventeenth (Descartes, Malebranche) and eighteenth (Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot) centuries (enlightenment). The questions I work on are those related to imagination as a faculty of the mind, that is, surrounding knowledge (epistemology) and creativity (aesthetics) ; and those related to historical progress.

Research information:
In her work, Jinny Yu attempts simultaneously to scrutinize conventions of painting and to explore new possibilities within the medium. Oscillating between the fields of the abstract painting and the object, her work seeks out aspects of painting beyond the pictorial space: she strives to depict that which is beyond the image and deliberately reveals the gestural aspect of painting as praxis. She frequently paints with oil on aluminum, whose semi-reflective surface comprises a pictorial space. This choice of materials is integral to her artistic practice and conceptual musings; the pictorial space of the aluminum is a material fact, a pre-existing condition of the as yet unpainted surface, and by painting on such a surface, one that is already pictorial, Yu's work begins where painting often ends.
