Our research addresses the role of the serotonin and dopamine systems in Depression, Anxiety, and Schizophrenia. In particular, our research focuses on genetic and environmental factors (such as early or late life stress) that determine the activity of these systems and the implications for brain function and behavior. We have identified specific gene polymorphisms, gene regulators and epigenetic alterations caused by stress that increase the risk of mental illness and affect the response to antidepressant treatments. Our current research is to develop animal models of these genetic alterations to identify their role in susceptibility to mental illness and as models to develop new treatments to attenuate the effects of stress, anxiety, or depression.

My lab is defining at the molecular level, the differences between normal and tumour tissues. Our plan is to develop novel cancer therapeutics that target tumour tissue but do not harm normal tissue. We are developing viruses that can infect and kill tumour cells but do not infect normal cells. These viruses are called Oncolytic Viruses

Thus, since reptiles are ectotherms, variation in their body temperature affects all of their developmental and behavioural processes. I specialize in methods for risk assessment and risk management, with a particular focus upon human health risks. I am particularly interested in the science policy interface that mediates between the synthesis of facts and the formulation of policy defining conclusions. Methods of particular interest include uncertainty analysis, applied decision analysis, demography, and health economics. I have applied these types of tools in the context of interpreting animal bioassay evidence in the support of regulatory determinations of chemical safety, and am currently applying demography approaches to the study of summary measures of population health (such as DALYs, QALYs, PEYLLs and alike).

Treatment of viral disease by determining how virus genes control disease. Specifically we study how alterations in virus genes control properties that increase damage or allow the virus to avoid host defences, such as the immune system. One of our current applications is to use viruses for cancer therapy.

Research in our lab concerns the most fundamental and persistent puzzle of nature: the origin and maintenance of biodiversity. Or, put another way, we are trying to answer the age-old question, why are there so many species in the world? To do this requires that we study the evolutionary process as it unfolds, keeping track of the variety of genotypes and phenotypes in a population or community through time, a task that would be very challenging with any large, long-lived organism. For this reason, we use microbial populations of bacteria and protists to study the evolutionary process in the laboratory. Topics of interest in the laboratory include the relationship between environmental variation and diversity, the genetics of adaptation, evolutionary medicine, and the evolution of social interactions.

Although there are many immune system responses against viral infections, Natural Killer (NK) cells are unique because of their rapid anti-viral responses to infections in comparison to other immune cells.
My research is focusing on identifying and defining the involvement of natural killer (NK) cells during chronic viral infections. We are integrating multiple disciplines to investigate what NK cells can do during chronic viral infection and to find new insights for treatment.

I am engaged in collaborations on enhancing surveillance of congenital anomalies in Canada, on long term health outcomes in people with congenital anomalies and on the etiology and management of cleft lip and palate.

Sensory systems are the gateway from the external world to our brains. They actively process raw sensory input and convert it into a form animals can use to guide themselves and interact appropriately. Sensory systems use feedback to optimize the analysis of important features of the environment. I study the role of feedback in sensory processing using an electric fish model.

My main field of research is targetting the salt-sensitive high blood pressure. The typical mammalian cell expresses thousands of proteins, over a third of which are regulated by the reversible addition of a phosphate group. My laboratory studies the targeting and regulation of PP1, one of the key enzymes in the cell that removes these phosphate groups. By studying this phosphatase in living cells using cutting edge fluorescence microscopy techniques and novel methods for identifying protein complexes, we can define its roles in diverse intracellular signalling pathways and how it may be disrupted in disease states such as cancer and diabetes.
