Research information:

Our research addresses the role of the serotonin and dopamine systems in Depression, Anxiety, and Schizophrenia.  In particular, our research focuses on genetic and environmental factors (such as early or late life stress) that determine the activity of these systems and the implications for brain function and behavior. We have identified specific gene polymorphisms, gene regulators and epigenetic alterations caused by stress that increase the risk of mental illness and affect the response to antidepressant treatments.  Our current research is to develop animal models of these genetic alterations to identify their role in susceptibility to mental illness and as models to develop new treatments to attenuate the effects of stress, anxiety, or depression.

I specialize in methods for risk assessment and risk management, with a particular focus upon human health risks. I am particularly interested in the science policy interface that mediates between the synthesis of facts and the formulation of policy defining conclusions. Methods of particular interest include uncertainty analysis, applied decision analysis, demography, and health economics. I have applied these types of tools in the context of interpreting animal bioassay evidence in the support of regulatory determinations of chemical safety, and am currently applying demography approaches to the study of summary measures of population health (such as DALYs, QALYs, PEYLLs and alike).

Khaled El Emam heads the Electronic Health Information Laboratory (EHIL) and has a research program devoted to facilitating the sharing of health information for secondary purposes while protecting the privacy of patients. In his lab, they develop technology to facilitate health data-sharing, including de-identification methods and secure computation methods to allow surveillance or analysis without compromising privacy. The different methods are suitable under different circumstances and constraints, from individual-level data release and on-going surveillance to interactive remote analysis.

Dr. El Emam’s research spans theoretical work (which consists of developing mathematical models and metrics of re-identification risk), empirical work (evaluations of our models and metrics through simulations and controlled studies), applied work (evaluations on large data sets), and knowledge translation (building software tools, instruments, and education).

I study how nonlinear systems can generate unpredictable behaviour including chaos. I also study how this behaviour is influenced by various sources of noise such as environmental fluctuations. This research is applied to the neurosciences, where I seek to understand how our senses code information about the outside physical world, and to unravel the secrets of the codes used by the brain. It is also applied to physiological variability such as that of heart rate and breathing rate in health and disease, using also nonlinear time series methods. My mathematical models make predictions about experimental outcomes in my colleagues' neurobiological and clinical laboratories. I am interested finally in plasticity and memory formation, neurotransmitter balance in mental health, the role of feedback between brain areas, and the behaviours of neurons under trauma.

Our first line of work focuses around the brain circuits involved in Depression.  In particular, Our research focuses on determining how stressors influence brain functioning and behavior. We are attempting to identify factors (genetic, neurochemical & psychosocial) that render individuals vulnerable to mental illness and those factors that impart resiliency. Our second line of research focuses on identifying plant derived medications that may attenuate stress, anxiety and depressive responses.

I am particularly interested in mental health. I study the links between social norms and mental issues. I published the following work in 2009 that draws upon this topic:  État dépressif et temporalité: Contribution à la sociologie de la santé mentale (Éditions Liber). My research also focuses on the practice of sport. As such, the Montreal Canadians represent, for me, an incredible mirror of contemporary social demands. I co-edited the book  Le canadien de Montréal: Une légende repensée, (Presses de l’Université de Montréal) in 2011. It investigates the social impact of this great hockey team. I also study  how sport can constitute a tool for psychosocial development, as a part of innovative intervention practices for troubled youth.

Our lab is interested in understanding how human cells respond to extracellular cues to maintain and ensure their function and survival. One central focus is to study how the pancreatic beta cell converts feeding cues into signals leading to insulin production and secretion.

We use high-throughput functional screens to identify novel players involved in different cell-signaling pathways, including human pancreatic beta cell proliferation and those involved in the maintenance of mitochondria, critical subcellular organelles essential for cell function and survival. In addition to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, our work impacts upon cancer and neurodegeneration.

I develop mathematical models of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, human papilloma virus, malaria and a variety of neglected tropical diseases. These models are in the areas of population epidemiology and within-host immunology. I look at intervention methods such as antiretroviral drugs, vaccines, quarantine and microbicides. I also study R0, the basic reproductive ratio for diseases. (I am also an expert in zombies and have the newspaper, radio and TV experience to prove it...)

Dr. Tremblay research program examines the impact of normal aging on hand function. Over the years, he also developed an expertise in the application of non invasive brain stimulation by means of magnetic stimulation (TMS). In his work, Dr. Tremblay uses TMS for safe and non-invasive explorations of the corticospinal system in humans. Dr Tremblay also uses psychophysical and biomechanical approaches to characterize sensory and motor deficits affecting hand function with age..

Research information:

The typical mammalian cell expresses thousands of proteins, over a third of which are regulated by the reversible addition of a phosphate group. My laboratory studies the targeting and regulation of PP1, one of the key enzymes in the cell that removes these phosphate groups. By studying this phosphatase in living cells using cutting edge fluorescence microscopy techniques and novel methods for identifying protein complexes, we can define its roles in diverse intracellular signalling pathways and how it may be disrupted in disease states such as cancer and diabetes.
