I am interested in all aspects of human security. In particular, I focus upon the role of public and private policing agencies in shaping collective order. I am interested in the powers, culture and accountability of public and private policing agencies. Looking at trends in policing tells us a lot about current directions in politics and economics at home and abroad.

My interest focuses on community and participatory approaches with popular civil society, such as people education in health, collaborative ethnography and action-research, which consider unpredictability and uncertainty of contexts in movement.

I had been living many years in the State of Amazonas (Brazil) and collaborate with brazilian and Latin American colleagues.

I work the questions of equality in international collaboration.

In Canada, my work focuses on the contemporary challenges of francophone nursing education with new immigrants and visible minorities, as well as with a new innovative project linking housing and HIV with a Coaltion of community-based organizations in Quebec.

I'm currently examining the role and treatment of information in public policy and operations in criminal justice: statistics, databases, registries, administrative operational data, research results etc. This information arises and is used as evidence in investigations and decisions of a wide range of police, judicial and correctional institutions. I am particulary interested in the validity and reliability of information and of procedures for its use, as well as implications for rights to privacy.

Geranda Notten has a PhD degree in economics and has extensive experience in the field of poverty, inequality and social policy as a researcher, university teacher and consultant. Geranda analyzes these topics from a national or international perspective. She has included the following countries in her analyses: United States, Europe (EU-15: UK, D, N, F, P, Au, Dk, Fin, Ire, S, Lux, B, Sw, I, Gr), Russia, Republic of Congo. How is the emergence of a global marketplace affecting opportunities to lead a healthy life? Who wins, and who loses?
