Raúl A. Baragiola, PhD

Dr. Baragiola was born in Santa Fé and studied at the Universidad de Córdoba and the Instituto de Física Balseiro, Universidad de Cuyo where he obtained his degrees of Licenciado in Physics and then Doctor in Physics in 1971. He was a visiting scientist at the University of Western Ontario (Canada), the University of Salford (UK), the Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin, Rutgers University, the Risoe National Laboratory (Denmark) and is currently a visiting professor at the Université de Paris.

Dr. Baragiola was a researcher of the Argentine Atomic Energy Commission, where he acted as Head of the Atomic Collisions Division, Professor of Physics in the Instituto Balseiro, and Founder and General Director of the computer company ALTEC S.E. in Bariloche. Since 1990, he is Professor of Engineering Physics and Materials Science and Director of the Laboratory for Atomic and Surface Physics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, USA.

Dr. Baragiola has received two national physics prices in Argentina, was chosen one of the "Ten Outstanding Youth" by the Chamber of Commerce of Argentina, received the Interamerican Price in Exact Sciences in 1983 from the Organization of American States, and was elected Presidential Fellow at the University of Virginia in 1995. He has served as an officer of the Asociación de Profesionales de la Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica, and of the Asociación Física Argentina and is an honorary member of the Bömische Physical Society. Dr. Baragiola is a member of the scientific team of NASA's Cassini mission to Saturn. He is author of more than 130 scientific publications and editor of a book. His main research interest is the basic physics of the interaction of energetic particles with solids and its applications to astrophysics and industry. Other interests are surface physics, the application of ion beams to biology, and complexity in the areas of human cognition, organization and design.
