Police Checks
The Police Check requirements vary depending on your program of study. For Education students, your police check documents are due before the start of classes. For Health Sciences and Medicine students, to see if a Police Check is required, refer to the Deadlines page.
When a Police Check is required, it means a police record check of a police clearance (CPIC) and a vulnerable sector check including a check for any Pardoned Sexual Offences.
The University of Ottawa will assist with police checks for students who are doing placements for academic credit towards their uOttawa degree. If a police check is required for potential employment or licensing (e.g. Ontario College of Teachers, Catholic District School Board, etc.), you must then seek assistance from the potential employer or licensing body.
Due to a recent change in government policy, police checks can not currently be conducted through the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. With a potential exception for Education students (outlined below), the only organizations authorized to conduct vulnerable sector checks are the local police services. Police checks are therefore to be completed through your local police station.
EDUCATION STUDENTS: In limited circumstances the Ontario Education Services Corporation (OESC) has agreed to accept a variation to the process. Education students should review the OESC website (http://oesc-cseo.org/English/checks.html) and determine if they meet their criteria. Students who meet the OESC criteria and wish to conduct their police check through the OESC can do so. Students who do not meet the OESC criteria or would prefer otherwise, are to complete a police clearance (CPIC) and vulnerable sector check at their local police station following the procedures outlined below.
EDUCATION STUDENTS must send a COPY of the police clearance (CPIC) AND VULNERABLE SECTOR, or OESC police check (if applicable) to the Faculty of Education, 145 Jean-Jacques Lussier Private, room 143, Ottawa, ON, K1N 6N5 and keep the original to show the school boards. Please note that the placement of the student will be withheld if these documents are not received.
HEALTH SCIENCE AND MEDICINE STUDENTS must send the ORIGINAL of the police clearance (CPIC) AND VULNERABLE SECTOR to the University of Ottawa, Clinical Placement Risk Management Team at 1 Nicholas St, Ottawa ON K1N 7B7 after making a copy for themselves.
STUDENTS LIVING OUTSIDE CANADA must contact Rema Boushey @ rboushe2@uottawa.ca for a uOttawa letter to provide to their local police department in order to complete a police check with the vulnerable sector. A notarized translation of the police check document will also be required if document is not already in English language.
If there is a delay with your police check and you will not be receiving it from the police service before your deadline, you must send us a copy of the receipt from the police service in the meantime.
Questions on police checks should be addressed to rboushe2@uottawa.ca or 613-562-5800 ext 3391 or for Pembroke to andersk@algonquincollege.com or 613-735-4700 ext 2706.
