Autoclaves

Autoclaves, over the years, have become a familiar piece of equipment in laboratories and departments. They provide an effective and efficient means of sterilizing and decontaminating items that may have become exposed to biohazardous or potentially biohazardous material. For this reason their popularity has increased, as has the number of users. Therefore, it is important to ensure all individuals are well trained. The determining factors in effective autoclaving must be recognized, as well as the limitations. As an autoclave utilizes both pressure and high temperatures, there is a significant risk of injury, therefore the appropriate controls and procedures must be put in place to minimize any potential harm.

To address these issues the University of Ottawa has prepared a series of documents to inform potential users and owners of the requirements, and the services available to assist them in using autoclaves safely and efficiently. The “Overview of the Autoclave Program” outlines who within the university is able to provide support and their roles and responsibilities. While the “Guideline for the Safe Use of Autoclaves” provides more detailed information which describes the issues that must be considered when autoclaving.
