Hazardous Waste

Waste in a cardboard box

The University of Ottawa produces various wastes, including hazardous waste, as a by-product of different activities. The disposal of hazardous waste is regulated under Environmental Protection Act Regulation 347 in Ontario. The Ministry of Environment requires hazardous waste generators be registered, and that they keep records of shipments and abide by Regulation 347 requirements.

The shipping of hazardous waste also falls under the Canadian Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Clear language Version. All hazardous wastes generated on University of Ottawa properties fall under the scope of the EHHS group.

The source of hazardous waste at the University is quite broad compared to most organizations. Because of the variety of activities on campus, the management of hazardous wastes can be a challenge. Among the waste and waste generating activities are:

  1. Teaching and research (photographic supply waste, laboratory supplies, paints, thinners, spent materials, biohazardous waste, radioactive sources used in equipment, etc.)
  2. Equipment and materials used by the University (power plant water conditioning chemicals, refrigerants, used oil, etc.)
  3. Construction work (batteries, paints, oil, gasoline etc.)

The University is a registered waste generator with the province of Ontario. All hazardous wastes must be disposed according to regulatory requirements including a waste manifest.

Rules

Rules on a Document Since the storage, collection, and shipment of hazardous waste are heavily regulated, there are University rules about the use of hazardous waste storage rooms. The Hazardous Waste Guide (update May 20, 2004) can be viewed to obtain more detailed information.

It is to be clearly understood that faculty/service personnel holding a key to the waste rooms are responsible for maintaining the rooms in an acceptable manner and following the Waste Storage Guide. The Science Stores has spill kits, empty containers, and other materials needed for these rooms.

The ORMis responsible for shipping the waste under Regulation 347, providing feedback on room conditions, and providing guidance and information on hazardous waste storage.

Storage

There are designated hazardous waste storage rooms across the campus. If you notice a hazardous waste room inventory is near-capacity, contact your EHS Officer. If you are from another faculty or service, contact ORM.

Only hazardous wastes are to be stored in these designated rooms. Any substances that are not hazardous waste are to be stored elsewhere.

Persons having access/keys to hazardous waste rooms can request a pickup by e-mail or call the ORM. Moving hazardous waste from laboratories and work areas into hazardous waste rooms is the responsibility of the generator.

What happens to the hazardous waste?

The University contracts hazardous waste removal services to a handful of qualified and licensed hazardous waste treatment facilities. The ORMselects treatment facilities that recycle wastes and find alternate markets when possible.
