Ionizing Radiation - Radioactive Material
![]() |
The possession, use, transfer and disposal of radioactive material is regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission under the authority of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and affiliated regulations. In addition, other national and international agencies may also have jurisdiction over how this material is managed. Hence the potential liabilities associated with radioactive material are great. |
In recognition of this the University of Ottawa, has mandated the University of Ottawa's Radiation Safety Committee and ORM to develop a Radiation Safety Program that not only ensures compliance but facilitates research activity. To this end, the Manager of Radiation and Biosafety and the Radiation Compliance Inspector, develop and modify the Radiation Safety Program to meet both the needs of regulatory bodies and users.
Internal Radioisotope Permits are issued to Principal Investigators, which identify what material may be used, as well as authorized locations and personnel. It is critical that all users comply with the Permit Conditions, requirements outlined in the Radiation Safety Manual and procedures associated with the program.
Should questions or concerns arise, both Lois and Ali are happy to discuss and find solutions to any problem or clarify any issue that may arise.
