Online MSDS databases
There are several places on the INTERNET that have huge databases filled
with MSDS information. Most of these sites are searchable by chemical
name, manufacturer name, and/or CAS. Just remember that you are responsible
for how you use this information. Always consult several sources. Some
of these links are quite often busy. If you can't connect on the first
try, try again later.
All those databases are accesible only from the University network,
no access from outside the University.
- MSDS More than 160,000 current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs),directly
from suppliers and manufacturers.
- GE
BETZ Canada This company includes their MSDS to CCOHS. Of
note to Physical Resources personnel.
- CHEMINFO Comprehensive, summarized OHS information on chemicals. Records
are in English.
- The Canadian enviroOSH
Legislation collections give you the complete text of all
Canadian health, safety and environmental legislation, as well
as critical guidelines and codes of practice.
- HSE
Line More than 184,000 citations with abstracts to worldwide
literature on OHS. Predominantly oriented towards safety and industrial
hazards.
- RTECS
Database Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) from the US National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health (NIOSH) provides toxicological information with citations
on over 140,000 chemical substances.

Databases from Chemical Suppliers
Can be searched using the suppliers product code as well. Some
of these sites require a password, check the list below for access.
- Sigma
Aldrich - If the case arises that a MSDS is not
available on-line, you can get additional information from Sigma-Aldrich
on-line MSDS Request form. To get full benefit from the site
you have to register on line. The registration is free. You
can logon as "uottawa" with password "uottawa".
- BDH -web server from BDH Inc.and EM Science. Can be searched by, Name,
CAS Number, Chemical Formula and Merck Index

University and other Organization's Databases
(Listed in order of preference) These links provide databases
not linked to a chemical supporter. The non University sites have
advertising and may be slower loading.
- ChemFinder is a name, formula, MW, CAS, and substructure searchable chemical
database. The ChemFinder WebServer indexes over 150 other chemical
information sites.
- Vermont SIRI -once connected,
you will be given instructions on how to search the MSDS archive.
This site also has links to other MSDS sites and Vermont
SIRI another site (sometimes slower)
- Cornell University -a good site with searches for MSDSs and TSCAs
- International
Chemical Safety Cards compiled by the International Health
and Safety branch of the United Nations has over 1300 cards with
information including risk and safety phrases in English and many
other languages
- New
Jersey Hazardous Chemical Fact Sheets are listed alphbetically
for easy searching. PDF Chemical Fact Sheets.
- Oxford University has a very thorough site with glossaries and specific sections
on gases, peroxides, carcinogens etc. Also included is a language
reference and PPE guide.
- United
States Environmental Protection Agency has fact sheets on
all substances monitored by its water, air hazardous waste etc.

- MSDS Search large site,

- Pharma Lexicon -"worlds
largest database" of medical, pharma, biotech, nursing, dentistry,
agrochem and healthcare abbreviations (50,000).
- University
of Akron Department of Chemistry has compiled an extensive
searchable database of over 13000 chemicals. Searches can be performed
based on chemical name(s), CAS format formula and registry numbers
etc.

Biohazards Databases
Many laboratory workers, whether in research, public health, teaching,
etc., are exposed to not only chemicals but infectious substances
as well. These MSDS are produced for personnel working in the life
sciences as quick safety reference material relating to infectious
micro-organisms.
- Health
Canada Office of Biosafety -MSDS are organized to contain
health hazard information such as infectious dose, viability (including
decontamination), medical information, laboratory hazard, recommended
precautions, handling information and spill procedures. Alphabetic

Substances and Diseases Registry -series of summaries about
hazardous substances being developed by the ATSDR Division of
Toxicology. Answers are provided to the most frequently asked
questions (FAQs) about exposure to hazardous substances found
around hazardous waste sites and the effects of exposure on human
