Take Our Kids To Work Day
When Why Health & Safety Concerns Participate?
The "Take Our Kids To Work Day" program is organized by "The Learning Partnership", a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing together business, education, labour, policy makers and the community to develop partnerships that strengthen public education in Canada. The program has brought together parents, relatives, friends of families, teachers, and people in workplaces across Canada to contribute to the career development of young people.
The "Take Our Kids to Work" program illustrates the importance of education, skills development and training while giving students the opportunity to experience the world of work and the variety of career opportunities that await them. The program, including the University of Ottawa, continues to emphasize safe and healthy workplaces.

Why is this an important initiative?
Take Our Kids to Work has three main objectives:
- To offer students a view of the work world and to give them an understanding of its demands and opportunities;
- To allow students to see their parents or volunteer hosts in different roles and responsibilities and to understand what they do to support a family; and
- To emphasize that education goes beyond the classroom and that the preparation of younger generations for the future is a community responsibility.
Why Grade 9 Students?
- Provincial curriculum guidelines include career education at this level;
- It is an opportune time to see the practical side of what they learn in school;
- Grade 9 students make course selections that could have an impact on their futures; and
- By asking critical questions they can make informed educational decisions.
Health and Safety?
Employers are required to register for the program and to implement
fairly stringent safety and security measures. The program requires the
University to take a zero-tolerance policy meaning that no infraction
of a health or safety rule will be tolerated. Consequently, participation
in the program will end for any child found not abiding by any of these
rules and you as the parent or guardian will be notified to pick up the
child.
Certain areas of the University will remain off-limits, unless under
very strict guidance of a competent individual, provision of the required
personal protective equipment, and provided the student not operate any
mechanical, electrical or powered equipment at any time such as
- High risk lab environments requiring the wearing of safety eyewear, lab coat, closed shoes, or dosimeter badges, or requiring any special vaccinations.
- The Power Plant requiring the wearing of steel-toed boots, hearing protection.
- Areas with higher risk mechanical, electrical equipment requiring the wearing of steel toed boots, hard hats, etc.

How do I participate?
- The employee wanting to accept a shadow should advise the Dean or Director and should register with the ORM at 562-5892. The Dean or Director can refuse the shadow if there is any concern over potential health or safety issues.
- Each parent must sign a waiver form identifying that they have received, read and understood the guide provided to them by their child's school. A copy of the consent form can be obtained from, and sent to Office of Risk Management.
- Parents must submit a signed permission form from the Learning Partnership (obtained from their child's school). A copy of the signed permission should be sent to the Office of Risk Management.
- The child must remain under the supervision of the employee or his/her delegate at all times while at the University.
- The child must read the University Guide for the event.
