ENGINEERING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Pierre de Gagné, Engineer

The Engineering and sustainable development sector’s role is in the forefront of the Physical Resources Service and within the University of Ottawa. In addition to supporting the planning, programming and project management sectors, our staff maintains a « bigger picture » view of the University’s infrastructure and adapts it to the growing needs of our community. We also ensure compliance with building standards in terms of life-expectancy and economy, energy management and costs, and we make sure that laws, standards and codes, especially quality, comfort, efficiency and environmental requirements, are met.

Sound energy and environment management are of utmost importance to the University of Ottawa. Indeed, thanks to well-designed and much-tested leading-edge programs in these areas, the University has garnered provincial and national awards. Our team of specialists performs thorough environmental assessments and air-quality analysis to make sure students, staff and professors work in a safe, comfortable campus setting. The same ardour attention to detail and quality goes into our energy and water conservation programs.

The service also ensures the running of the Central Power Plant that meets all the University’s energy needs, performs preventive and corrective maintenance and administers the central monitoring system of the main campus, the Roger-Guindon Hall and the Alta Vista Health Sciences Centre.

Engineering and sustainable development is responsible for the development and implementation of project designs that comply with the University's material and performance guidelines, drafts of technical standards and their application procedures as well as policies for acquisitions, design and commissions, and as such, administers the technical planning needed to meet the demands of growth and optimal space use, producing drawings and plans, estimates and calls for tender for construction or renovations.

Although the sustainable development program is in its infancy, we are proactive in this domain. Amongst our most immediate preoccupations, as vectors of evolution and development, are the recycling and green-house gas emission programs. Many energy-conservation and environmental-protection projects are up and running thanks to the involvement of the entire university community (students, staff and professors).
