Reduce - Reuse - Recycle

Recycle Bin

The Physical Resources Service manages the University of Ottawa's waste-reduction program. Over a year ago, the Physical Resources Service set up a very dynamic recycling program.

For a better understanding of the Recycling Program, take a look at each objective.

In addition, we have introduced a composting pilot project for kitchen waste from the University Centre cafeteria.

If you have questions about our recycling program, contact Claire Nadon, Housekeeping and Site Supervisor (Waste Management and Recycling), at 562-5800, extension 6613 or by E-mail at cnadon@uottawa.ca

Reduce at the source

There are many options available in this case. Here are a number of suggestions:

  • use both sides of a sheet before throwing it in the blue recycling box;
  • use cartridge pens instead of ball point pens;
  • print rough copies on the back of paper that has already been used;
  • make note pads out of sheets that have writing on one side only;
  • make full use of intra mail envelopes before throwing them in the blue box;
  • bring your lunch in reusable plastic containers; use a mug instead of polystyrene glasses;
  • if you share office space, use only one telephone directory.

    These practices not only reduce waste, they reduce costs.

In sum, there are a thousand and one ways to reduce waste at source. We just have to stop and think about it. The effort is indeed worth it, because it also protects our environment.

Reuse

The reuse program involves products that can be used in other products or that are reused in their original state. On campus, we reuse items such as dry-ink cartridges for photocopiers and laser printers. The merchandise we receive is often delivered on wood pallets that are also reusable.

A number of other articles can also be reused. If you have excess furniture, you might find a taker on campus if you publish an ad on our computer network.

If we all pitch in, a larger number of items could be reused on campus.

Recycling

Our recycling program has made tremendous strides since its inception in September 1990.We've not only reduced our non-reclaimable waste by half,but also reached new heights in recycling.Your good faith and cooperation are cornerstones of this success.

What do we recycle ???

Fine Papers

All main-campus offices and all offices at Roger Guindon Hall have blue recycling boxes. The boxes bear a sticker indicating what can be placed inside. If you don't have a box or a sticker, simply call the Physical Resources Service Control Centre at 562-5800, extension 2222 and give them your name and address. They will have your blue box delivered within 48 hours. The Housekeeping staff of the Physical Resources Service will then empty the box regularly.

Shredding

If you have confidential documents you would like shredded, call 562-5800, extension 2222 to have a container delivered; this will save you from having to look for or buy boxes. Your documents will be placed in a safe location. If you like, you can witness the shredding of the documents yourself.

Cardboard

Cardboard boxes that are folded and left in the hallway will be picked up by the Housekeeping staff regularly. If you need boxes, call 562-5800, extension 2222; the attendant will tell you where to find cardboard recycling containers; you can then help yourself to what you need.

Books

Your old books can also be recycled. Once again, simply call 562-5800, extension 2222 to have them picked up.

Glass

Glass containers, both clear and coloured, are recyclable. However, broken glass, drinking glasses, as well as ceramic and crystal are not.

Plastic

Plastic containers are recyclable, except bags and polystyrene items.

Metal

All metal and aluminum containers are recyclable.

Blended Fibers

All types of paper, cereal boxes, egg cartons, glossy-paper magazines are recyclable.

Phone directories

Each year at the end of January, we ask that you leave your directories in the hallway near your office when the new directories are delivered.

Computers

If you must dispose of one or more computers, you must first give their inventory number to Mr. Danny Brisson (Materials Management Service, 562-5800, extension 6541). You must then call 562-5800, extension 2222 to have the computer picked up for recycling.

Batteries

You'll find a battery-recycling bin near the recycling centres in the following locations: Tabaret, Simard, University Centre (ground floor); Vanier, Lamoureux, D'Iorio (near the store in the basement), Roger Guindon, Arts, Perez, Morisset, Montpetit, Marion, 141 Louis-Pasteur, Colonel By and SITE.
