Since 1848, the University of Ottawa has been Canada's university: a reflection, an observatory and a catalyst of the Canadian experience in all its complexity and diversity. Located in the heart of the National Capital Region, our university makes three major contributions to the local economy:
- We are an engine of job creation and a major purchaser of goods and services.
- Our graduates earn more thanks to their postsecondary education and
- As a major research engine, and source of innovation, the University contributes to productivity gains in the Ottawa-Gatineau economy.
DIRECT AND INDIRECT EXPENDITURES
THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF A LARGE ORGANIZATION
The University of Ottawa plays a vital role in the area as a major employer and a major purchaser of goods and services. Using an economic, demand-driven perspective, we can estimate how the University’s consumption of goods and services affects the region’s expenditure flow. Based on this approach, economic activity linked to the University’s presence in the Ottawa-Gatineau region is estimated at $1.17 billion a year. This figure includes:
- Local spending by the University, its staff and its students,
- Spending generated by people who visit the region because of the University’s presence, and
- The indirect impact of these expenditures: each dollar spent directly by the University or individuals associated with it generates more transactions in the regional economy.

THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF EDUCATION
University graduates earn more thanks to their postsecondary education. Taking into consideration the salary differentials attributable to the level of education of uOttawa alumni living in the region, we estimate that an additional $1.12 billion is injected into the region every year. This education premium increases to $1.68 billion annually once indirect effects are taken into account.
