A few tips on using the On-line Terminology Guide
- Note: If you're conducting a search in French involving a multi-word term
or expression, you get the best results if you either
- enter only the masculine form of the main word (ex. "agent" instead of "agent de liaison" or "agente de liaison" ), or
- enter only the defining word (ex. "liaison" rather than "agent de liaison" ou "agente de liaison"). Also make sure to keep words in the singular ("activité" not "activités").
- The same applies to English-language searches. Results are more extensive if you stick with, say, "honours" instead of "honours bachelor's degree." Again, enter the singular form.
- Next, choose the term's language under Language.
- Now, decide where you'd like the search to take place in the guide (under Where do you want to look?). For instance, you can limit your search to main entries or synonyms, or you can explore all possible fields (main entries, synonyms, definitions and notes). Reminder: Your search results will include terms that contain the one you're looking for (ex. if you enter scholar, you also get scholarship, scholarly and related terms).
- Click on Search or press Enter.
- Your results come up on the screen, with perfect matches listed first if there are any. Any related terms appear lower down. Just click on the term you want to see the complete file.
