February 8, 2002Student newspapers mark milestones![]() Both University of Ottawa student newspapers celebrate important milestones in 2002. The English-language student paper, The Fulcrum, founded in 1942, is marking its diamond anniversary this year, while La Rotonde, the French-language paper, has been in business for 70 years. Both newspapers represent the interests of their respective linguistic groups and are a deeply rooted part of student life at the University. The papers voice the opinions of students on a variety of issues and current events that frequently have impact on student life and are often of a controversial nature. The fact that La Rotonde and The Fulcrum are celebrating 70 and 60 years of publication is, in itself, an impressive feat, especially since a student newspaper often has a transitory existence. Despite having gone through periods of uncertainty, they have on the whole served the student population well. Coinciding with the anniversaries, The Fulcrum last month hosted this year's Canadian Student Journalism Conference. The six-day conference was organized by the Canadian University Press (CUP), which has 75 member newspapers and 415,000 weekly readers. This is the first time in more than a decade that the CUP's full membership has visited the nation's capital. The conference provides student journalists with the opportunity to meet for seminars, workshops, keynote addresses and networking. |
