Guiding Principles for Animal Use and Care

The University of Ottawa, in collaboration with its Partners 1, is committed to:

  1. conducting research in an ethical manner;
  2. the responsible use and care of animals for research and educational purposes;
  3. providing animal care resources to promote research excellence and growth;
  4. developing policies and a clear accountability framework, applying policies consistently and communicating these in a timely and transparent manner;
  5. ensuring flexibility based on appropriate harms-benefit analysis;
  6. seeking appropriate input from users and relevant administrators in planning for and maintenance of animal care resources;
  7. ensuring a rate structure competitive with comparable animal care services.
Faculty Members of the University of Ottawa are committed to:
  1. conducting research in an ethical manner;
  2. working in collaboration with the Animal Care and Veterinary Service;
  3. sharing responsibility for compliance with guidelines and legislation governing animal use and care for research and educational purposes;
  4. being knowledgeable about their responsibilities and ensuring adherence to good animal practices;
  5. ensuring that research personnel under their supervision receive the appropriate training and follow approved procedures.
Animal Care and Veterinary Services are committed to:
  1. conducting research in an ethical manner;
  2. working in collaboration with faculty members and the administration to foster excellence in research;
  3. working in collaboration with faculty members and the administration to provide care to animals used for research and educational purposes in accordance with established norms for standard of care;
  4. offering support and guidance to faculty members and research personnel;
  5. developing and maintaining leading-edge facilities and skills;
  6. transparency in operations and open communications;
  7. providing expert advice to the Animal Care Committee;
  8. monitoring and ensuring the appropriate execution of approved protocols.
