Centre stage

Sandro Gambarotta. Faculty of Science - Department of Chemistry
Gambarotta's lab was awarded state-of-the-art equipment - a single crystal x-ray diffractometer with a charge couple detector (CCD). This major piece of equipment, the best in its league, was obtained by an NSERC grant combined with a contribution from the University of Ottawa. This instrument enables precise determination of the three dimensional structure of molecules within two hours.

Janice A. Leroux. Faculty of Education
Leroux was elected President of the Ontario Educational Research Council/Conseil Ontarien de recherches pédagogiques in Toronto. Leroux's domain of expertise is in special education more specifically with gifted and talented learners. Her mandate as President of the OERC/CORP is for one year and her primary goal is to expand corporate sponsorship in Ontario.

Yves Marcel. Faculty of Medicine - University of Ottawa Heart Institute
Marcel received the McLaughlin Medal awarded by the Royal Society of Canada for important research of sustained excellence in any branch of medical science. Marcel has researched cardiovascular diseases for 30 years and has made significant contributions in the area of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism.

Yves de Montigny. Faculty of Law - Droit civil section
Montigny has taken a two-year leave from his regular teaching position at the Faculty of Law so as to gain new experiences in the Privy Council of Canada. He is working alongside Minister Stéphane Dion on Canada's constitutional reform. Montigny's knowledge and expertise in the field of constitutional law will provide a solid theoretical foundation for political debates.

Susannah Scott. Faculty of Science - Department of Chemistry
Scott is the only Canadian who received one of the six Innovation Recognition Awards presented by the Union Carbide Corporation for 1998. The award consists of an unrestricted grant of $10,000 US and a trip to Union Carbide's Catalysis Research Centre in Charleston, West-Virginia. Her field of expertise is in the modification of surfaces so as to construct new catalysts which are applied in polymerizations and oxydations.
