Women's Health - A Priority at U of O
The University of Ottawa is the recipient of the Corinne Boyer
Research Chair in Ovarian Cancer, an endowment worth $1million.
The fund was created by Patrick Boyer in memory of his wife, Corinne
Boyer, who died of ovarian cancer in 1995 at the age of 57. Mr.
Boyer's altruism reflects his wish to help other women and their
families avoid the pain and loss created by ovarian cancer. Approximately
1,500 Canadian women die each year from this horrible disease.
The Faculty of Medicine is an established research centre in ovarian
cancer. With greater resources and expertise, the Corinne Boyer
Research Chair will build upon the Faculty's existing strengths.
The University of Ottawa, strongly committed to this cause, will
also provide matching funds for new faculty positions, greater laboratory
space, and the latest technology. These promising initiatives will
give new hope to many women suffering from ovarian cancer.
The new Chair holder is expected to be announced by the end of
April 1998. The mandate of the successful candidate is to attract
other researchers and additional funding to the program, and to
assist in public and professional education regarding the prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment of ovarian cancer. Finally, the Chair is
to provide public leadership in all areas dedicated to the battle
against ovarian cancer.
