Elected to the Royal Society of Canada
The following individuals were recently elected to the Royal Society
of Canada in recognition of their contributions to research: Leslie
Armour from the Department of Philosophy; Robert Korneluk, geneticist
at the Faculty of Medicine; Joseph Magnet, professor of law in the
Common Law section; and Shana Poplack, sociolinguist at the Department
of Linguisitics. The University of Ottawa congratulates these outstanding
individuals for their achievements and wishes them continued success
in their endeavours.
Alex Fallis. Faculty of Science - Department
of Chemistry
Alex Fallis has won the prestigious Alfred Bader Award from the
Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC). The $3,000 award, established
by industrialist Alfred Bader, honours excellence in research in
organic chemistry by a scientist under the age of 60. Fallis works
in the field of synthetic and medicinal organic chemistry. His laboratory
develops synthetic strategies and novel methods for the construction
of complex natural products with medicinal potential. Specific targets
include the potent antitumour agent Taxol and related analogues.
David Staines. Faculty of Arts - Department of
English
David Staines has been awarded the distinguished Lorne Pierce Medal
given by the Royal Society of Canada. The Medal is awarded "for
an achievement of special significance and conspicuous merit in
imaginative or critical literature written in either English or
French". Staines has meaningfully contributed to three fields
of English Studies: Canadian literature, Medieval literature, and
Victorian poetry, in all of which he has emphasized the relation
between literature and its social context.
