In 1999 the Royal Society of Canada granted
14 awards and medals to meritorious Canadians two of which are professors
at the University of Ottawa. Marcel Leblanc received the McNeil
Medal for the promotion of science to the public, and Nicolas Georganas
the Thomas W. Eadie Award for contributions in engineering and applied
science.
Marcel Leblanc, Emeritus professor of Physics, is well known in
the National Capital Region for his spectacular science-demonstrations.
He has captivated over 400 audiences over the last 30 years in auditoriums,
cafeterias, school gymnasiums, and has systematically attracted
large crowds at the Christmas Scientific Lectures held at the University
of Ottawa. He is continually called upon to judge at local and national-science
fairs.
The McNeil Medal was created in 1991 to recognize "the important
role that science plays within our society and to encourage the
communication of science to students and the public. The Medal is
awarded to a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding ability
to promote and communicate science to students and the public within
Canada." (RSC)
Nicolas Georganas was featured in the Summer issue of 1999 for
the Thomas W. Eadie Award.
