The CCERBAL also serves as an advisory body on language policy and social cohesion in Canada and internationally. Its services are available to the academic community, to governments, and to non-governmental organizations with interest and responsibilities in the field of bilingualism, broadly defined. Welcome and mandate
Created in 2007, the Canadian Centre for Studies and Research on Bilingualism and Language Planning has empowered the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute and the University of Ottawa to become catalysts for bilingualism and pluri/multilingualism research in Canada.
A warm welcome to our research centre!
CCERBAL connects internationally recognized researchers in various fields, including language teaching and learning, assessment, technology, language policy, and family language policy. Our researchers cross disciplinary boundaries, innovate, and support multilateral exchanges and partnerships. A number of their research projects are externally funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Canadian Heritage, the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO), the Ontario Ministry of Education, and by private donors.
The Centre hosts several research chairs and research groups that contribute to its impact and vitality. The CCERBAL also enjoys a privileged relationship with like-minded centres, organizations, and associations, such as the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT), the Canadian Association of Immersion Professionals (ACPI), the European Centre for Modern Languages (CELV) of the Council of Europe, and the European Civil Society Platform for Multilingualism, among others.

Our mandate
The Canadian Centre for Studies and Research on Bilingualism and Language Planning (CCERBAL) was established by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) with a mandate to promote innovation and excellence in research. By supporting research chairs, research groups, an academic journal, conferences, symposia, special events, partnerships, and multiple other activities, the Centre fosters national and international interdisciplinarity exchanges. In addition to its core and associate members, CCERBAL also welcomes researchers in residence and student researchers who further contribute to the Centre’s richness and vitality.

The CCERBAL is based on a modern concept with no single specified physical space. The centre uses the infrastructure of the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI), the Faculty of Arts and the University of Ottawa. It includes offices, a resource centre with a reception desk (JCRC), meeting rooms, auditoria and conference facilities, core member offices, invited researcher spaces, graduate student spaces, and of course virtual spaces.
