Here are some responses to offensive or unwelcome sexually oriented behaviour, which has just occurred for the first time. Which response would you choose?
(i) You remain silent :
You are not providing any information to the person responsible for the behaviour regarding the offensiveness or unwelcomeness of the behaviour. The person is not likely to stop and might be encouraged to continue because of your silence.
(ii) You leave the room without saying anything :
This non-verbal behaviour may be very effective if correctly associated with what transpired before. Because nothing is said, the person may misinterpret the gesture.
(iii) You avoid the person responsible for the behaviour :
This is an indirect strategy. You are modifying your routine in order to avoid the person and possibly at some cost to yourself. You might still run into the person responsible or the person might make efforts to find you.
(iv) You tell the person that his or her behaviour is unwelcome :
This direct strategy is usually effective in addressing the problem once it arises.
