The University of Ottawa is presently in a public phase of a major fundraising campaign called Defy the Conventional. The goal is to reach $400M by 2020. To be successful in this fundraising campaign, uOttawa has a dedicated team of professional fundraisers that help raise funds for multiple initiatives and priorities.
In your Faculty, the Dean works closely with you and other Department Chairs to establish funding priorities on an annual basis. Once these priorities are identified, the Dean meets with the Faculty Development Officer (FDO) to prepare a plan and identify potential donors that would financially support these projects short term and long term.
Your role as Department Chair is to accompany the FDO (with some of your researchers) to establish a relationship with these donors in order to be able to present your key initiatives that may be funded short term and longer term. This will require some time and effort on your part to help strengthen relationships however this may lead to very interesting financial partnerships with these donors. Understanding how these donors want to impact society will empower you to present the similarities between your research and what they can support financially.
