Sanni Yaya is an Associate Professor of Economics and Global Health at the School of International Development and Global Studies where he teaches courses on International Development Issues, International Development Programming and International Project Management. Prior to joining the School, Professor Yaya was the Assistant Director of the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, and was a member both of the University’s Board of Governors and the Senate.
His research is founded upon his trans-disciplinary academic training in economics, sociology-anthropology, management and public policy. He is the Editor of the Innovation Journal, and currently leads a series on Society and Health at the University of Ottawa Press. Professor Yaya was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Yale University, and a Senior Visiting Scholar at New York University (NYU). He has experience in the design and implementation of randomized controlled trials and observational epidemiologic studies of maternal and child health, infectious diseases and chronic diseases.
Dr Yaya and his research team focus their work on the following topics: improving access and use of health services in low-and middle-income countries; health systems reform; sociology of health; global health financing; effects of globalization; economic evaluation of health interventions; and the interaction between economic development and health care. Building upon the existing literature, his research relies upon long term field observations and primary data collection experiences. Findings from his work can be integrated into future strategy development and large-scale implementation efforts undertaken by different organizations and the wider global health community to improve access to care in less developed countries (LDCs).
His research has been supported by many grants from a variety of institutions, such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Canadian Research and Technology Initiative (CRTI), the Department Foreign of Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD). He has published 18 books and numerous book chapters and technical reports. His research articles have appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet, Health Policy, International Journal of Medicine (Oxford University Press), Clinical infectious diseases, and AIDS. As well, Dr Yaya has been a senior advisor to several health intervention programs and international developments projects funded by WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, The World Bank, private foundations, and many governments.
