Senate By-Law No. 1 2012

A By-Law governing the composition of the Senate

WHEREAS the University of Ottawa Act, 1965, S.O. 1965, c. 137 by Article 15, provides for the composition of the Senate of the University;

AND WHEREAS the Senate may, pursuant to sub-section (h) of Article 15 (1), determine by By-Law those members who will be part of the Senate besides those members outlined in sub-sections (a) to (g) of Article 15 (1);

IT IS HEREBY DECREED as a By-Law of the Senate of the University of Ottawa as follows:

1. The following persons are members of the Senate of the University of Ottawa pursuant to sub-section (h) of Article 15 (1):
(a) One regular full-time member of the academic staff elected by the Council of the Faculty in each of the Faculties of the University and one regular full-time academic member of the Library elected by the Council of the Library.

In the case of the Faculty of Law, which does not have a Council of the Faculty as such, the election of the member of the academic staff shall be deemed to be in accordance with the above paragraph when the election of the member elected by the Council of one of the Sections has been ratified by the Council of the other Section. In so electing a member for the Faculty of Law, the Sections shall have regard to sub-section (d) of Article 15 (1) of the University of Ottawa Act, 1965, with a view to permitting that when the professor elected under sub-section (d) of Article 15 (1) is a member of the Section de Droit civil, the member of the academic staff elected under this paragraph will be a member of the Common Law Section and vice-versa. Members of the academic staff elected under this paragraph shall have a term of three (3) years.

In Faculties where at least one position of Associate Dean or Vice-Dean has been created, the Council of the Faculty may decide, by a By-Law duly approved by Senate, that one of the persons appointed as Associate Dean or Vice-Dean will be the member of Senate who otherwise would be elected as per the preceding paragraph.

(b) One full-time student elected by his peers in each of the Faculties of the University of Ottawa and one student for the two sections in Law; the method of election and the period of mandate to be determined by resolution of the Senate.

(c) Two full-time students registered at the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, elected by their peers; the method of election and the period of mandate to be determined by resolution of the Senate.

(d) The Associate Vice-President, Academic.

(e) The University Registrar in accordance with the Senate By-Law No. 2, 2008.

(f) The Associate Vice-President, Academic (International) and Director of the International Office.

(g) The Associate Vice-President, Research.

(h) The Associate Vice-President, Research (External).

(i) The Dean of the Common Law Section and the Dean of the Section de Droit civil.

(j) The Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

(k) The University Librarian.

(l) The Director of Co-operative Education Programs.

(m) The Director of the Teaching and Learning Support Service.

(n) The Director of the Student Academic Success Service.

(o) The Director of the University of Ottawa Center for Continuing Education.

2. This By-Law No. 1, 2012 repeals By-Law No. 1, 1978 and its amendment, By-Law No. 2, 1978, and repeals By-Law No. 1, 1986 and its amendments, By-Law No. 1, 1992 and No. 1, 1995, and repeals By-Law No. 1, 2008.
