On stage with our alumni is produced in collaboration with Jean-Michel Ouimet, BA ’04, from Klash Média.

Mélissa Ouimet, BA Arts ’13

This Franco-Ontarian rock star has been wowing audiences for over a decade.

She has performed at Montreal’s FrancoFolies, FestiVoix in Trois-Rivières, Constellation francophone in Ottawa, and as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations. Winner of the Ontario Pop fan choice award, Mélissa Ouimet took off for Asia in 2007, where she gave no less than 310 performances in one year, with stops in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul.

She is known for her collaborations and has opened for such renowned artists as Robert Charlebois, Véronic DiCaire, Eric Lapointe, Bobby Bazini, Martin Deschamps and Sylvain Cossette. In 2019, her talents as a performer were showcased during the popular Quebec version of The Voice, where she earned a spot in the quarter finals as a member of Marc Dupré’s team. A woman of heart and mind, she recorded Personne ne pourra m’arrêter, which has become a Franco-Ontarian rallying cry and garnered 400,000 views on social media. In the spring of 2020, Mélissa returned to the fray with a new song, entitled In Love Again, which is featured on her third album.

As a classically trained clarinetist and a touring/session musician, Yolande is a core member of art-rock band Pony Girl and ambient chamber project mal/aimé.

With bandmates and fellow uOttawa alumni Greggory Clark, Pascal Huot and Julien Dussault, she has been thrilling fans of the emerging music scene with her meditative touch. In her debut solo project under the pseudonym Orchidae, Yolande reflects on her Franco-Taiwanese identity, life and death, and themes of alienation through soft, hypnotic melodies and mantras intertwining with minimal, at times psychedelic orchestration. Based in Ottawa, she is currently recording a full length
album set to release in 2021.

With music that incorporates pop, groove, funk, and soul, Yao’s gentle poetry and artistic imagination have a warm charm.

Yao is a musician, producer and CEO of his own record company, Intello-Productions. After earning accolades in Canada’s Francophone music scene with the 2013 release of his album Perles et Paraboles, in 2016 he released Lapsus, which climbed to 24th in the Top 200 new French Pop releases on iTunes Canada. In 2019, he earned seven nominations at the Trille Or Awards Gala, winning the three most coveted prizes, namely Artist of the Year, Performance of the Year and Media Choice Award.

As an artist-entrepreneur, he was awarded the Senate Commemorative Medal in 2018 to underscore his achievements and his community involvement in promoting cultural diversity across the country. Thanks to several tours across Canada and abroad (France, Madagascar, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Cape Verde), Yao and his musicians have crafted their show into a personal, vibrant and captivating performance.
