Biography

Bio Sketch:

Dr. Hillel Finestone is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or physiatrist. He graduated from McGill Medical School and received Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialty training at the University of Ottawa and the University of Michigan. He is an Associate Professor in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Finestone is the Director of Stroke Rehabilitation Research at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital, Bruyère Continuing Care and an electromyographer at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.

Dr. Finestone's stroke research interests include 1) nutritional issues, 2) driving, 3) use of virtual reality training and 4) rehabilitation. He recently wrote a book, for health care professionals and laypersons, entitled "The Pain Detective, Every Ache Tells a Story" (published by Praeger ABC-Clio, 2009, Santa Barbara, CA). The book describes, in a clinical case format, the roles that psychological and social factors may play in healing and recovery from a painful musculoskeletal injury.

Research Interests:

  • Stroke rehabilitation: 1) virtual reality exercise therapy in the stroke survivor, 2) driving and stroke, 3) nutrition and stroke, 4) technology use in the rehabilitation of the stroke survivor
  • Musculoskeletal pain and disability: 1) musculoskeletal injury and psychological and social factors, 2) sexual abuse and chronic pain, 3) carpal tunnel syndrome and lateral epicondylitis

Major Research Activity: (synopsis of research conducted)
Virtual reality exercise therapy in the stroke survivor

  • Pilot project of virtual reality (VR) exercise therapy for rehabilitating stroke in- and outpatients at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital Stroke Rehabilitation Unit showed that VR technology can potentially improve fitness and balance in this population
  • 2010: Recipient of Bruyère Academic Medical Organization Incentive and Innovation funds (total $120,000) to study use of VR to improve balance in rehabilitating stroke inpatients
  • June 2010: Inaugural recipient of Dr. Tony Hakim Innovative Stroke Research Award ($100,000 unrestricted grant) from Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery for VR project
  • June 2010: Tony and Elizabeth Graham Virtual Reality Research and Training Centre established at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital. Medical Director: Dr. Hillel Finestone
  • July 2010–June 2013: Randomized controlled trial: VR exercise training for stroke rehabilitation inpatients (in collaboration with Heidi Sveistrup, PhD, and Martin Bilodeau, PhD)
  • Grant applications submitted for phase 2: VR exercise for stroke rehabilitation in nonambulatory inpatients (Grant-in-Aid Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, $300 K applied for)
  • Hypothesize that VR exercise therapy will become a mainstream stroke rehabilitation treatment that will enable stroke survivors to become more active in their communities
