There’s only one more month of school left! Can you believe it? For students who are completing their undergraduate degrees, or graduate students earning a master’s or PhD, convocation is certainly right around the corner. As the saying goes, “time flies.” Although your time at the University of Ottawa has primarily been spent studying, completing assignments, dealing with Ottawa’s winter weather, and transitioning to online learning because of a global pandemic, now is the perfect time to tick off some of those Gee-Gees bucket list items or to launch the next phase of your career.

  1. Savour fare from the uOttawa Poutine Festival: Nothing says springtime at uOttawa like the smell of fresh fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy! Be sure to check out the annual Poutine Festival, in honour of the Mois de la Francophonie, happening from March 21 to March 25 at University Square.

  2. Enjoy a last chance to eat at uOttawa: Sample some of the best food our campus has to offer! Get a hot dog from Randy, the hot dog guy on Laurier Avenue, enjoy a large fry from Bac à Frite, and take on all-you-care-to-eat at the Dining Hall.

  3. Use campus as your backdrop: Your next step may mean entering the workforce. Make the most of the scenery on campus to update your LinkedIn profile shot by using locations such as Tabaret Hall or the FSS green wall as your backdrop.

  4. Get a good last look at the city: For many, the end of your studies will mean moving away from the city. Over this next month, we encourage you to take some time to soak in everything  the city has to offer: amazing walks along the Rideau Canal, enriching museum visits, great culinary experiences, a tour of Parliament, and a view of the sun setting over Major’s Hill Park.

  5. Attend an NHL hockey game at a discount: Make the most of student discount pricing by attending an Ottawa Senators game!

  6. Experience a classic Canadian sugar shack: Stanley’s Old Maple Lane Farm, located 25 minutes south of campus, is a great Canadian experience. You’ll get to watch maple syrup be created from tree sap, ride a sleigh, pet animals, and taste maple flavoured goodies.

  7. Visiting the RBC branch on campus: Big changes are coming your way! A new full-time job means more money in the bank. Meet with a financial advisor to plan your budget, understand your spending, and get advice on investing.

  8. Attend the RBC Your Brand Matters workshop: If you’ve acquired an entrepreneurial mindset while studying at uOttawa and the next step after university is launching your own company, or if you simply want to make the right impression in your next professional endeavour, this workshop is for you. You will learn how to build awareness of your brand and use it effectively throughout your career.

  9. Attend the Backpack to Briefcase workshop: Are you graduating from the Faculty of Science? Here is an upcoming networking event where you can “speed date” employers to discover different career opportunities.

  1. Attend the Government Jobs information session and workshop: Those already seeking job opportunities will want to attend this event! Get information and tips on various opportunities within the government of Canada. The workshop also includes a tutorial on how to access the online application forms and how to prepare for the application process.

  1. Attend the Value-Based Living workshop: Jumping into the work force and leaving academia behind can be a scary, challenging transition. This workshop will help you identify your values and how you can apply them within the various facets of your life.
