I have a long-standing interest in the regulation of neural progenitor potential and output. I began my career around 15 years ago at Western University in London Ontario, where I did Master’s degree studying the molecular biology of glutamate neurotransmitter receptors. I moved to the University of Calgary, where I did my PhD work with Dr. Carol Schuurmans. I studied how growth factor signaling regulates the function of proneural bHLH transcription factors, which are key regulators of neural development. I worked on the developing neocortex, but the lab also studied retinal development. It was at this time that I became interested in the retina as a model system. I moved to Michel Cayouette’s lab in 2010 at the IRCM in Montréal for my post-doctoral work. There, I focused on the retina, but continued to work on neural progenitor biology.
I will continue to study mechanisms controlling retinal progenitor potential and output. This is an important topic for understanding and optimizing the production of mature retinal cells. We will also examine how transcriptional control mechanisms are linked to retinal degeneration. I am particularly interested how gene misregulation contributes to diseases like Retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration.
