Dr. Screaton’s lab interest is to identify novel genes that control the function and survival of human cells. High-throughput functional screens are used to identify novel players involved in different cell-signaling pathways, including human pancreatic beta cell proliferation and those involved in the maintenance of mitochondria, critical subcellular organelles essential for cell function and survival. The research impacts upon cancer, neurodegeneration, and diabetes. One central focus is to study how the pancreatic beta cell converts feeding cues into signals leading to insulin production and secretion, with implications for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Robert Screaton received his graduate training at McGill University in Montreal, Canada (1998), and pursued post-doctoral studies at the Burnham Institute (1999-2002) and the Salk Institute (2002-2005) in San Diego, California. Dr. Screaton holds the Canada Research Chair In Apoptotic Signaling, Tier II, and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He is a specialist in cell signaling, functional genomics, pancreatic beta cells and mitochondrial quality control.
