Updated information on COVID-19 and immigration
Given the rapidly changing situation, check our regularly updated immigration FAQ as well as our COVID-19 uOttawa student FAQ.
Visa, study permit and Electronic Travel Authorization
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has said that Visa Application Centres (VACs) won’t accept or process paper applications for a visitor visa, study permit or work permit until further notice. You must apply for your study permit online.
Due to COVID-19, special IRCC measures for international students are in place, subject to change. Please note that IRCC is responsible for evaluating your study permit application. The University of Ottawa doesn’t have any control over the decision or processing times and can’t contact IRCC on your behalf.
To help you with your application, watch our How to Apply for a Study Permit video, part of our Immigration Information Sessions YouTube playlist. If you have any questions about your temporary residence, attend our weekly SOS Immigration virtual sessions presented by our immigration advisers.
Bringing your family to Canada
Your spouse, common-law partner, dependent child, or children might be able to live with you in Canada during your studies. In most cases, they should apply at the same time as you for their own Temporary Resident Visa or Electronic Travel Authorization.
Your spouse may also be eligible to apply for an open work permit while you’re studying. Learn more about open work permit eligibility criteria.
