Biographie

Carissima Mathen, LSM a rejoint la faculté en 2011, et une professeure titulaire de droit. Elle enseigne le Droit Constitutionnel et Pénal Canadien, ainsi que des séminaires sur le Droit Constitutionnel Avancé. Elle a joué le rôle de Vice-Doyenne (Académique) du Programme d’Anglais entre 2017 et 2019. Entre 2002 et 2011, Professeure Mathen était professeure de droit à l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick. Entre 1994 et 2001, elle a été avocate et, plus tard, Directrice du Fonds D’action et d’Éducation Juridique pour les Femmes (FAEJ) engageant un litige sur les droits à l’égalité devant la Cour Suprême du Canada et d’autres Cours. Elle a participé dans des cas formatifs liés à la charte de la cour de Lamer Vriend v Alberta, R v RDS, Winnipeg Child and Family Services v G, M v H, R v Darrach et R v Mills.

Professeure Mathen est une experte du Droit Constitutionnel Canadien. Sa monographie, en 2019, Courts Without Cases: The Law and Politics of Advisory Opinions (Hart), a remporté la deuxième Place Distinction au prestigieux concours du Prix Walter-Owen. Elle a également écrit The Tenth Justice: Judicial Appointments, Marc Nadon and the Supreme Court Act Reference (UBC Press, 2020). Elle est l’éditrice du principal recueil de cas Canadian Constitutional Law 6th Édition (Emond, 2022). Son manuscrit le plus récent, (De)Coding the Court : Legal Data Insights into Canada’s Supreme Court, est sous révision par Routledge. Professeure Mathen a été l’auteur de dizaines d’autres travaux concernant le droit constitutionnel, le droit pénal, la pédagogie juridique, et la théorie juridique féministe. En 2018, la faculté de droit a reconnu son travail en lui décernant le Prix d’excellence en recherche juridique.

Professeure Math écrit et est régulièrement mentionnée dans les médias nationaux. Elle a reçu des prix de la Faculté de Droit ainsi que de l’Université d’Ottawa pour l’Excellence dans les relations avec les Médias.

Professeure Mathen a également gagné multiples prix de la part de la communauté juridique. Elle est la récipiendaire de la Médaille de la Société de Droit, une des plus hautes distinctions décernées par le Barreau de l’Ontario. Récemment, citant sa “contribution hors du commun dans l’écriture juridique dans le domaine du Droit Constitutionnel Canadien, le gouvernement de l’Ontario lui a conféré la Médaille David W. Mundell de 2022.
