Graduate Courses
-
In some cases, we may cancel classes with low enrolment or convert them into Directed Studies.
-
Some graduate courses are offered every year, others in alternating years.
-
MED 8166 part 1 and 2 is compulsory for all students enrolled in a PhD program and attendance is mandatory for all workshops.
-
MED 8167 part 1 and 2: You must take this course during the first year. You cannot defer this course to a subsequent term.
-
You must take 6 optional EPI units (PhD-level courses often have EPI 7XXX course codes) during your first year of study. These units may include:
-
Advanced methods courses that are offered as permanent course offerings
(e.g., EPI 7108 Analytic Epidemiology and/or EPI 7105 Advanced Methods in Biostatistics are each suitable courses to aid students in preparing for the comprehensive examination); -
“Special topics” courses in an area of special interest to the student and offered at an advanced level
(e.g., EPI7913 Advanced Health Economic Evaluation); and/or -
“Directed studies courses”, which are developed for one or a very small number of students and may incorporate innovative features such as a combination of existing courses and extra-university learning experiences (e.g., workshops, e-learning activities, special projects). Directed studies courses must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies after submission of the proposed syllabus using a standard template.
-
-
In addition to these course requirements for all doctoral students, some students have additional course requirements specified as conditions associated with their individual offers of admission, for example, MSc-level courses that address gaps in the student’s background preparation for the doctoral program.
-
You may choose to complete extra courses, beyond the requirements described here.
-
You must complete all required courses in advance of sitting the comprehensive examination.
THD 9999 Thesis (Continuous activity)
-
Once you have enrolled for the first time in a continuing activity such as the thesis, you must maintain your enrolment until the activity is completed.
-
After your first (manual) enrolment to the thesis, all subsequent enrolments are automatic, unless you have a hold on your account (which will require that you manually enroll once you have arranged to have your hold lifted)
EPI 8166 Seminar Series
-
As part of the requirements of the Seminar Series, you must attend the EPI Annual Research Day

Meet with your Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC)
You must hold your first TAC meeting during the third term.
Your meetings can be more frequent, but once a year, for every subsequent years, you must meet with your TAC. -
