First Term

Milestones

  • Create and meet with your Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) before the end of the first term. It is essential that you schedule your TAC meeting well in advance.

  • Fill out the Nomination TAC Members form.

  • Complete your section of the Thesis Advisory Committee report.

  • Submit the Thesis Advisory Committee form and the Annual Research Progress report before the end of this term through the Service Request application in your uoZone account.

  • Fill out and submit your Individual Plan of study (ISP).

  • You have to describe and justify your proposed course work.

  • You TAC need to approve your ISP

  • In some cases, we may cancel classes with low enrolment or convert them into Directed Studies.

  • Some graduate courses are offered every year, others in alternating years.

  • MED 8166 part 1 and 2 is compulsory for all students enrolled in a PhD program and attendance is mandatory for all workshops. 

  • MED 8167 part 1 and 2: You must take this course during the first year. You cannot defer this course to a subsequent term.

  • You must take 6 optional EPI units (PhD-level courses often have EPI 7XXX course codes) during your first year of study. These units may include:

    • Advanced methods courses that are offered as permanent course offerings
      (e.g., EPI 7108 Analytic Epidemiology and/or EPI 7105 Advanced Methods in Biostatistics are each suitable courses to aid students in preparing for the comprehensive examination);

    • “Special topics” courses in an area of special interest to the student and offered at an advanced level
      (e.g., EPI7913 Advanced Health Economic Evaluation); and/or

    • “Directed studies courses”, which are developed for one or a very small number of students and may incorporate innovative features such as a combination of existing courses and extra-university learning experiences (e.g., workshops, e-learning activities, special projects). Directed studies courses must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies after submission of the proposed syllabus using a standard template.

  • In addition to these course requirements for all doctoral students, some students have additional course requirements specified as conditions associated with their individual offers of admission, for example, MSc-level courses that address gaps in the student’s background preparation for the doctoral program.

  • You may choose to complete extra courses, beyond the requirements described here.

  • You must complete all required courses in advance of sitting the comprehensive examination.

THD 9999 Thesis (Continuous activity)

  • Once you have enrolled for the first time in a continuing activity such as the thesis, you must maintain your enrolment until the activity is completed.

  • After your first (manual) enrolment to the thesis, all subsequent enrolments are automatic, unless you have a hold on your account (which will require that you manually enroll once you have arranged to have your hold lifted)

  • As part of the requirements of the Seminar Series, you must attend the EPI Annual Research Day

    You must hold your second TAC meeting within 16 months of initial enrolment.

  • Submit the Thesis Advisory Committee form and the Annual Research Progress report before the end of this term through the Service Request application in your uoZone account.

  • If you have not submitted your TAC or Progress Report by the end of this term, you will not be able to enrolment for future terms.

  • Completion of the comprehensive examination should occur within 4 or 5 term of your first enrolment.

Fifth term

  • Within 6 months of the thesis proposal approval, publicly present the proposal and submit a report to the TAC for approval. Once the form is approved, submit it to the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office.

Sixth Term

  • Submit thesis proposal to TAC for approval. Once approved, submit an approval form to the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office.
