Who - What - Where - When - Why?
- Students with a GPA of 8.0/10 (A-) and above
- Academic Merit Scholarships
- Via appropriate portals
- 8-16 months before the beginning of your program of studies
- Substantial amounts – 15 000 $ minimum for one year
Being well prepared
- Identify 2 professors who will write you excellent letters of recommendation
- You will need to provide a research proposal or;
- if your program is non-research based you will need to identify the relevant courses, provide an explanation of your choice and outline your special interests in the proposed area of studies
- if the output of your program is an artistic creation rather than a thesis, you will need to indicate the research component of your proposed work
- Many Faculties will offer workshops, mentors, information sessions, etc. to help you to write a research proposal and prepare your application
- Check the FGPS website regularly starting in Mid-August for up-to date information on application processes, deadlines and possible information and chat sessions that will be offered
- Add to your agenda the deadlines – the deadlines are firm
Provincial Scholarships
Ontario
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
Value : $15,000 + Excellence Scholarships if attending the uOttawa
Duration : One year (non-renewable: you must apply every year)
May be held during the first 6 sessions (2 yrs) of a master’s program (you must apply 8-12 months prior of the funding beginning)
- Minimum GPA of 8.0/10 (A-)
- Each university in Ontario receiving an OGS allocation administers the entire OGS application process and granting of OGS awards.
- Each university establishes their own deadlines
- OGS awards are not transferable between universities
- OGS awards are not transferable between faculties at UO
- You must submit an OGS application to each Ontario university with whom you are seeking admission to a graduate program
- You do not need to be a resident of Ontario
- -Citizenship: be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person (under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protections Act (Canada)), temporary resident visa or student study permit at the time of the OGS application deadline
Québec
- Fonds de recherche du Québec sur la société et la culture (FRQ-SC)

$15,000/year + Excellence Scholarship if attending uOttawa

Candidates must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (S.C. 2001, c.27).
- Be domiciled in Québec for at least 6 months
- Be resident of Québec within the meaning of Article 5 of the Health Insurance Act and the Regulation respecting eligibility and registration of persons in respect of the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec. (CQLR, c.A-29 and CQLR, c.A-29, r.1).

Value: $17,500 for one year (non-renewable)
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- Have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of full-time studies (or equivalent) in:
- The master’s program for which you are requesting funding; or
- The doctoral program for which you are requesting funding if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program; or
- A master’s program, but are requesting funding for a doctoral program (an example is a student who is fast-track from master’s to a doctoral program within 12 months of starting their Master’s and is seeking funding for the first 12 months of their doctoral program
- Must have a minimum GPA of 8.0/10 (A-) in each of the last two years of full-time studies
- Not have previously held a CGS-M

Tri-AgencyGraduate Scholarships
Applicants are evaluated and selected according to the general criteria in the following categories. However please consult each agency’s website for accurate evaluation criteria.
- Academic excellence
- Weighting: 50%
- As demonstrated by past academic results, transcripts, awards and distinctions.
- Research ability or potential
- Weighting: 30 %
- As demonstrated by the applicant’s research history, his/her interest in discovery, the proposed research, its potential contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field, and any anticipated outcomes.
- Communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities
- Weighting: 20%
- As demonstrated by the applicant’s past professional and relevant extracurricular interactions and collaborations.
Excellence scholarship
- Awarded for the duration of the external award
- This scholarship will replace the Admission Scholarship
- Awarded to recipients of major external awards : CIHR, FRQ, NSERC, OGS, QEII-GSST, SSHRC
- The value of the scholarship is equivalent to the tuition fees, up to $10,000 per year
- There is no guarantee of a matching component from the academic units (however, many academic units continue with the matching component).
