Dear Members of the University Community,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Adel El Zaïm as Chief Internationalization Officer for a three-year term, beginning August 13, 2018. Following the publication of the report of the President’s Committee on the University’s International Policy (PDF 1.27 MB), Dr. El Zaïm’s role will include developing an internationalization strategy and action plan to ensure the University is well positioned on the international stage. He will focus on international strategic management and planning at the University and will seek to promote recruitment and develop successful international partnerships.
He will support the international efforts of the faculties, the International Office, the Office of International Research and Strategic Enrollment Management, while drawing on the expertise and distinctiveness of each of faculty and service, who will continue to manage the operational aspect of the University’s international activities. With 15 years’ experience in the internationalization of higher education and international development research sector, Dr. El Zaïm comes to the uOttawa from the University of British Columbia, where he was Executive Director of the International Office. Prior to his time at the University of British Columbia, he held similar positions at Université de Sherbrooke and worked for 8 years in the Middle East Office of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), after having gained extensive experience as a member of the Quebec research and innovation community. He holds a PhD in linguistics (cognitive semantics) from Université Paris-Sorbonne and completed his postdoctoral research at Université du Québec à Montréal.
Dr. El Zaïm currently sits on the Board as well as on the Strategic Planning Committee of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), a global association dedicated exclusively to leadership in the field of internationalization of higher education.
