David William SCOTT
DUniv. 2001

Honorary Doctorate Recipient

As one of Canada's most highly respected lawyers, David Scott has tackled difficult cases, taking many of them as far as the Supreme Court, on behalf of such clients as prime ministers, the chief justice of Canada and justices of the Supreme Court, sometimes on the same day!

Beyond his reputation for representing the rich and famous, however, Scott freely gives his time and expertise to such community organizations and charities as United Way, the John Howard Society of Ottawa, the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Canadian Stroke Network. As co-chair of the Ottawa Senators Community Coalition, he helped organize the drive to sell season tickets to ensure the continued survival of the Senators in Ottawa. As chair of the 1996 Triennial Review Commission, he recommended equitable compensation for judges to ensure the best and brightest end up on our benches.

Scott graduated from the University of Ottawa in 1960 and was appointed Queen's counsel 14 years after being called to the bar. Today, he is co-chair of Borden Ladner Gervais, one of Canada's largest law firms and is one of Canada's leading authorities on intellectual property.

Last year, he received an honorary doctorate of laws from the Law Society of Upper Canada.
