On March 28, 2022, the Peruvian Constitutional Court released its judgement on the Fujimori case. Mr. Fujimori was President of Peru between 1990 and 2000. During his government, he ordered the killing and disappearance of political opponents, including the killings and disappearances ordered in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases. In 2009, he was convicted to serve a 25-year term in prison for crimes against humanity.
The Human Rights Clinic has supported victim organizations with amicus briefs before the IACtHR and the Peruvian Supreme Court. In the opinion of Salvador Herencia, director of the HR Clinic, the majority decision disregards Peru’s binding international human rights obligations and the rights of victims. The case will now be heard by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) in the coming weeks.
