Breadcrumbs: Modifying the breadcrumb to add a parent site

* decoration
Example of a breadcrumb with a parent site (i.e. the Faculty of Arts)

The following tutorial will explain how to add a parent site (both the name and the link) to the breadcrumb of an existing website. This is often done for schools, departments and institutes to tie them back to the main faculty website under which they reside. For example, on the School of Rehabilitation's website, the breadcrumb links back to the Faculty of Health Science's website.

Prerequisites

Users with the role of editor, webmaster or administrator have the ability to modify the existing site header (internally called the "Site ID Banner"). However, only users with the role of administrator will be able to modify the theme settings.

Modifying the "Site ID Banner" block

  1. From the main administrative menu, navigate to Content.
  2. At the top-right, click on the tab Blocks.
  3. On the page that appears, find the block called "Site ID Banner" and click on the link Edit associated with it. Then fill out the fields as follows:
    1. Make sure that the field Site ID Home Page (all languages) is not empty. If it is, enter the value "<front>" (including the angled brackets).
    2. In the field Primary Parent Site Name, enter the name of the parent site (e.g. a faculty name).
    3. In the field Primary Parent Site Link, enter the full URL of the parent site.
    4. If you need to have a second parent due to the hierarchy of your sites and departments, fill in the appropriate values in the fields Secondary Parent Site Name and Secondary Parent Site Link.
  4. Save your changes.

Adding the French translation

  1. To add the French translations, edit the Site ID Banner once more.
  2. At the top-right, click on the tab Translate.
    1. Note: If you get an access denied error at this step, you will need to relog into your site from the French side to be able to continue.
  3. On the page that follows, find the language French and click on the link Add or Edit associated with it.

Modifying the theme settings

If you are not a site administrator, please contact your site administrator or request that a member of the Support team verify the settings for you using the Service Desk request form.

  1. From the main administrative menu, navigate to Appearance.
  2. Under University of Ottawa - Default Theme (default theme), click on Settings.
  3. Under the section Breadcrumb Settings, checkmark the option Show parent site link in breadcrumb.
  4. Two other theme options unrelated to the breadcrumb that you may want to consider are the Site ID Settings: Show primary parent on all pages and Show secondary parent on all pages. Checking these options will display the parent site's name in smaller font above the site's name for all pages. By default, they only appear on the site's home page.
  5. Once done, save your changes.
