ITA1113 Italian Cinema (3,0,0) 3 cr.
Cinema in Italy with emphasis on trends such as Neorealism, New Cinema, Avant-garde cinema, as well as films by contemporary directors. A study of the cultural, political and social determinants that generated these films. Selections from directors such as Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Federico Fellini, Bernardo Bertolucci, Lina Wertmuller, Giuseppe Tornatore. Most films are in Italian with subtitles.
No knowledge of Italian is required.

An examination of the Italian presence in Canada and the United States and its contribution in North American social, cultural, literary, and political life, from contemporary figures as diverse as Cristoforo Colombo and Giovanni Caboto to Frank Sinatra, Pietro Di Donato, Robert De Niro, Nino Ricci, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese.

Critical discussion of plays, poems, and fiction representative of major writers from the Middle Ages to the present. Study of texts by authors such as Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarca, Machiavelli, Galileo, Leopardi, Manzoni, D'Annunzio, Pirandello, Mariani, Morante, Calvino, Eco. Readings are in translation. May be counted for the Concentration in Italian provided readings, assignments and exams are completed in Italian.
