Nutrition Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences baccalauréat spécialisé en sciences de la nutrition, taught in French to bilingual students, is the only program of its kind in Ontario. This unique four-year program includes hands-on learning through placements. It provides a stimulating learning environment built on a team of dynamic professors actively engaged in research.

The program deals with the multiple challenges related to food and nutrition that individuals and societies face today, in particular, malnutrition, increased incidence of obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure, aging populations, risk of food contamination, genetically modified organisms, new food technologies and the complex nature of food services management. The curriculum involves general courses in psychology and communication, basic science courses (anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, bacteriology and immunology) and nutrition-specific courses (food science, food-service management, community nutrition, nutrition through the life cycle, nutrition assessment, nutrition and metabolism, clinical nutrition, and nutrition research).

Internships can take place in a number of settings, such as hospitals, community health centres, Health Canada, fitness centres, private clinics, agri-food companies and food-service providers, generally within a 200 km radius of Ottawa. Upon receiving their diploma, graduates can write the national accreditation exam.

Dietitians work in many different places, including hospitals, community health centres, long-term care centres, private clinics, agri-food companies and government.
