MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The social sciences are at the crossroads of the humanities and sciences. Choosing social sciences as a field of study translates into a unique experience at the very heart of the modern university's mission to maintain and to promote both the humanistic and scientific traditions. Choosing social sciences also means enjoying a grand intellectual tradition combined with the precision of scientific knowledge, both essential to careers in today's world.

The University of Ottawa is the only university of its kind in North America to offer almost all of its undergraduate and graduate programs in both French and English. By choosing the Faculty of Social Sciences, you will experience the French and English cultures, which are not only at the heart of our Canadian heritage but are also two of the most important intellectual forces in the Western World.

Six departments and schools at the Faculty offer close to 20 undergraduate programs of study that can be combined together, in conjunction with any of the range of programs of the Faculty of Arts, or as part of a double-concentration program in Canadian studies, global studies, governance and public policy and women's studies. Since September 2002, the Faculty has offered new joint honours programs in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts allowing students to complete two honours programs in four years. In addition, students can now choose one of the three new pluridisciplinary programs offered such as: BSocSc with honours in public administration, BSocSc with honours in international development and globalization or the BSocSc with honours in international studies and modern languages. The
Faculty also offers three co-operative education programs: economics, political science and sociology. In terms of numbers, more than 130 professors, and as many sessional lecturers teach approximately 600 courses to over 3,800 students.

In selecting the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa, students chose to learn in a stimulating environment, rich with cultural and intellectual traditions.

I have no doubt that students will benefit greatly from this environment while at the same time contribute to its enrichment and to the legacy of future generations.
