DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
a) Obtaining a degree
To obtain a degree, a student must meet the following criteria:
1. Completion of all requirements common to all programs offered by the Faculty, including
a) total number of courses;
b) level of courses;
c) passing grade*;
d) minimum cumulative grade point average* (CGPA);
e) minimum diploma grade point average
(if applicable)*(DGPA);
f) number of credits to be completed, according to the residence requirements of the requested degree as specified in the regulation regarding the minimum number of credits to be obtained at the University of Ottawa;
g) time limits.
2. Completion of all specific requirements of the program.
3. Formal application for the degree at the Office of the Registrar.
* Starting in May 2003, students admitted to a honours program before the New Regulation takes effect can choose between the old or new requirements (that is, C+ in all honours courses and required CGPA or; the minimum grade of D in all courses, and the required CGPA and DGPA).
b) Minimum number of credits to be obtained at the University of Ottawa (residence requirements)
To obtain a baccalaureate from the University of Ottawa, a student must obtain a minimum of 30 credits at the University of Ottawa. The credits are divided as follows based on the type of baccalaureate.
Concentration: minimum of 30 credits of which 18 must be in the chosen discipline.
Honours: minimum of 30 credits in the chosen discipline.
Joint programs: a minimum of 24 credits in each of the two chosen disciplines.
To obtain a certificate from the University of Ottawa, a student must accumulate a minimum of 15 credits at the University of Ottawa.
Students who already hold a degree from the University of Ottawa should consult the regulation concerning the granting of
a second degree from the University of Ottawa (see section 8e).
c) Granting of degrees - combined programs
Students registered in a concentration or honours program in the Faculty of Arts may, as part of their elective courses in their program of studies, fulfill the requirements of a concentration or of an honours in another discipline in the Faculty of Arts, or another Faculty as a second program of studies provided that they are admitted to that program.
In the case of combined programs, students must satisfy all requirements for both degrees. Certain courses may, however, be credited towards the requirements of both programs. Nevertheless, students pursuing a double degree may find it necessary to do more than the minimum number of courses required for a single degree program of either three or four years.
Students wishing to pursue combined programs must consult an academic advisor at the Faculty. When registering for graduation they must indicate both disciplines sought, and will receive only a single diploma bearing mention of both programs completed.
However, in cases where students have completed two honours programs, two diplomas will be awarded. Students must always complete the number of credits required for each degree and fulfill all of the requirements of both honours programs. (See also the regulation regarding the granting of a second degree from the University of Ottawa (section 8e)).
d) Maximum duration of studies
In cases where students have failed to obtain a degree within
12 years of their date of admission, the Faculty of Social Sciences reserves the right to impose new courses where necessary to comply with any modifications in the program leading to the degree in which they are enrolled.
e) Granting of a second degree from the University of Ottawa
A person who holds a first degree can obtain a second one at a higher level in the same discipline or a second degree in a different discipline.
To obtain a second degree from the University of Ottawa, students must meet the following criteria.
1. They must complete a minimum of 30 credits or the equivalent beyond the normal requirements of the first degree. At least 15 credits must be taken at the University of Ottawa.
2. They must meet all the specific requirements of the concentration or honours program in which they are registered. It is understood that students must always complete a minimum of 30 credits at the University of Ottawa in order to obtain a degree. In cases where students are registered in a concentration program, they must take at least 18 of the 30 credits in the chosen discipline. If registered in an honours program, they must take the 30 credits in the chosen discipline, and 24 credits for each discipline in the case of joint programs.
A person who has a baccalaureate or a certificate can obtain a certificate in another discipline.
To obtain this certificate, students must meet the following criteria.
1. They must successfully complete a minimum of 15 credits at the University of Ottawa, beyond the requirements of the first degree (baccalaureate or certificate from the University of Ottawa).
2. They must meet all the requirements of the certificate program in which they are registered.
In these cases, the calculation of the CGPA takes into account the courses retained from the first concentration, honours program or certificate (because they apply to the second degree), as well as the courses taken after the granting of the first degree.
A maximum of 12 credits at the 1000-level (in addition to those of the first degree) may be credited towards a second degree.
f) Registration for degree
In order that their names be submitted to the Senate, students who expect to complete their degree requirements must fill in the registration for degree form. The form is available at the University Web site, at InfoService and at the Academic secretariat of the Faculty. This form must be returned to the Office of the Registrar no later than March 1 for spring convocation and no later than September 1 for fall convocation.
The final grade for deferred (DFR) courses and courses taken at another university must be received by the Faculty prior to May 15 for students registered for spring convocation and prior to September 15 for students registered for fall convocation.
NOTE: Students must ensure that the courses in which they are registered meet the requirements of the degree sought.
