Faculty of Social sciences

GENERAL EDUCATION AND SPECIALIZATION

Most of the programs offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences are designed in such a way that the student may select a number of courses which will provide a good general education while, at the same time, allowing for intensive study in a particular field.
To pursue their general education, students have access to a variety of courses within the humanities (history, philosophy, geography, and other subjects) and the pure sciences (mathematics, biology, chemistry, and other pure science subjects).

Students may decide to explore several of these fields in order to increase their general knowledge. At the same time, students may decide to deepen their understanding of one particular field by selecting an area of concentration.

In an honours program, the courses emphasize concepts and tools that students require in their future profession. To this end, each discipline within the Faculty includes a nucleus of compulsory courses. Apart from this nucleus, the students may choose other courses that will define their area of specialization.

Also, the Faculty of Social Sciences offers several pluridisciplinary programs that involve courses from several disciplines and lead to an honours baccalaureate.

Finally, the faculties of Social Sciences and Arts have joint honours programs that allow students to complete two honours programs in four years. These programs permit students to broaden their education, enhance their job prospects and provide access to graduate studies in two fields of studies.

It is important that undergraduate students become familiar with research methods used in their fields. All programs therefore include courses designed to fulfil this need as well as to prepare students to pursue their studies at the graduate level.

BILINGUALISM AND BICULTURALISM

The policy on second languages at the University of Ottawa aims at fostering the development of bilingualism and encourages students to learn the official second language or to enhance their knowledge of it. The University invites students to take basic or enriched
second language courses, offered by the Second Language Institute, which will be credited in their program. Students should write the placement test to determine the course code corresponding to their level of proficiency. A document issued by the Second Language Institute provides information regarding courses offered.

NOTE: A student whose mother tongue is not one of the two languages of instruction of the University of Ottawa must take one of the language tests recognized by the University before
admission, except when another proof of language competency can be provided.

The cost of make-up course, if required, are borne by the student.

PROGRAMS OFFERED AT THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Faculty of Social Sciences prides itself on flexible, multi-option programs. For example, in first year, a student can take a general first year in social sciences, opt for a specific program, take a single program or a combination of two programs or specialize in two specific programs.

The deadline for all program changes (with the exception of certain limited enrolment programs) is the same as the deadline for course changes (see the sessional dates on the University of Ottawa Web site).

General first year in Social Sciences
In this first year, a student will study a general curriculum in social sciences. On the strength of solid academic supervision, the student will then be ready to choose a specific discipline from
among those offered in social sciences in the second year.

Concentration Programs (three years)
The Faculty requires a minimum of 90 credits in concentration programs.

The requirements of the following concentration programs are described under the section concerning each unit:
• criminology
• economics
• political science
• psychology (BA)
• sociology
• women’s studies

Honours Programs (four years)
The Faculty requires a minimum of 120 credits in honours programs.

Specific courses in the honours field constitute about half or more of the entire program.

The requirements of the following honours programs are described under the section concerning each unit:
• criminology
• economics
• political science
• psychology (BA with or without thesis)
• psychology (BSc)
• sociology

Joint Honours Programs (four years)
Joint honours programs allow students to complete two honours programs in four years. These programs will permit students to broaden their education, enhance their job prospects and provide access to graduate studies in two fields of studies. Admission to these programs of studies is available at the second-year level only.

The requirements of the following joint honours programs are described in the section entitled Description of joint honours programs:
• communication and political science
• communication and sociology
• geography and sociology
• history and political science
• mathematics and economics
• philosophy and political science
• sociology and women’s studies

Pluridisciplinary Programs (four years)
The Faculty offers three pluridisciplinary programs that involve courses from several disciplines. They require a minimum of 120 credits. Unlike regular honours programs, the specific courses in the honours field are taken from many disciplines. Given the greater number of compulsory courses, the addition of any second concentration is not an option.

The requirements of the following pluridisciplinary programs are described under the section concerning each unit:
• international development and globalization
• international studies and modern languages
• public administration

Co-operative Education option
The co-operative education option combines the usual academic training with study-related paid work in business, government or industry. In such a program, students alternate their study terms with four work terms after the second year of study at the University.

There are three co-op options at the Faculty of Social Sciences:
• economics
• political science
• sociology

Combined fields of study
A student may combine two fields of study. The student registered in a concentration or an honours program can, through electives, complete the requirements of a concentration in another discipline after being admitted to that discipline. The two disciplines will be
specified on the diploma.

For example:
BSocSc with honours in political science and concentration in history
OR
BSocSc with concentration in economics and concentration in computing technology
OR
BA with honours in psychology and concentration in sociology
OR
BSc with honours in psychology and concentration in mathematics

Students registered in an undergraduate program at the Faculty of Social Sciences who wish to obtain a degree with two specifications may choose from a wide variety of subjects. Program requirements for the following fields of study are described in the section entitled

Second Concentration Programs.
