Community-Based Aboriginal Teacher Education Program

This three-year, part-time program is offered in partnership with Indigenous communities and consists of courses and work in schools, including 80 days of practice teaching. Courses are delivered through distance education in the fall and winter and in person in the sponsoring communities during the summer.

If you successfully complete the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program, you can receive certification by the Ontario College of Teachers to teach in the Primary/Junior division (junior kindergarten to Grade 6). Program graduates who enter with an undergraduate degree from a recognized university receive a bachelor of education.

Those who enter with a Grade 12 high school diploma or the equivalent receive an Aboriginal Teacher Education Program certificate. Those who receive this certificate and later submit proof of an undergraduate degree, including 15 full courses or the equivalent within 10 years of receiving their certificate, also receive a Bachelor of Education.
