ACADEMIC ADVISORS

A team of five academic advisors is available to students of the Faculty of Arts to provide counselling during their university career, taking into consideration their previous studies, aptitudes and career plans.

They may also be consulted for information on programs of study, international exchange programs, Faculty and university regulations, the different services offered at the University, analysis of an academic file, course approval, prospective graduate studies and professional programs such as law, education and medicine.

Students can meet an academic advisor by visiting the undergraduate office in Simard Hall, Room 128. For an appointment call (613) 562-5134.

ACADEMIC ASSISTANTS IN THE DEPARTMENTS

In addition to the team of academic advisors, students may also consult academic assistants in the various departments of the Faculty.

They can provide information on departmental programs of study, regulation and services, approve course selection and make changes to an academic file.
Students can meet an academic assistant by visiting a specific department.

SHELTERED PROGRAM
The sheltered program is designed for certain students admitted on probation to the Faculty of Arts. It helps students succeed in their studies and acquire good study habits. Students in this program must participate in workshops on study methods, time management or other subjects given by the Centre for Academic Success (CAS).

PEDAGOGICAL RESOURCES
A Writing Centre, an Academic Writing Help Centre, a Second Language Resource Centre, and language laboratories are all available at the Faculty of Arts.

WRITING CENTRE
The Writing Centre, located in Simard, Room 0021, is open to all students and particularly to those registered in a course at the Department of English, the Département des lettres françaises, and the School of Translation and Interpretation.

The centre helps students improve their writing ability in English and French. It is equipped with numerous multimedia workstations, a large selection of software as well as reference books, handbooks and workbooks on English and French grammar and composition.

The graduate assistants working at the centre provide individual assistance to students and offer, by appointment, free tutoring on essay writing. The centre also gives free workshops on writing-related topics.

For more information, call (613) 562-5800, ext. 1111
or visit the centre at Simard Hall, Room 0021.

CENTRE FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS (CAS)

The Centre
The Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences are the University's major direct-entry faculties. To make it easier for new students to adapt to university life and studies - hence encourage academic success - the Centre for Academic Success was created to serve students in both Faculties. The centre facilitates student integration, contributes to the intellectual growth, and fosters a greater sense of belonging.

Services and workshops
Graduate and undergraduate students from the Centre for Academic Success offer support to students on academic probation and help other students experiencing difficulties in their studies. In addition to providing help on an individual basis, student mentors offer weekly workshops on a variety of topics.

The Centre is located at 110 University.
Telephone: (613) 562-5800, ext. 1654.

SECOND LANGUAGE RESOURCE CENTRE

The Second Language Resource Centre, located at 600 King Edward Avenue, Room 111, offers to University students - registered in language courses or not - and staff members, a wide variety of resources designed for learning French and English as second languages: self-practice audio and multimedia laboratory, tutorials, tapes (audio and video), workbooks, tests, reference books (grammar books, general and specialized dictionaries, encyclopaedias), and other resources.
Telephone: (613) 562-5800, ext. 3387.

CENTRE FOR RESEARCH ON FRENCH-CANADIAN CULTURE

The Centre for Research on French-Canadian Culture is an interdisciplinary research unit attached to the Faculty of Arts. It was founded in 1958 by four professors of the Département des lettres françaises. Jean-Pierre Wallot was named director in July 2000 and is assisted by an executive committee of seven members.

The centre welcomes researchers, faculty and students in the humanities and social sciences in the field of French-Canadian studies. It supports research projects (mainly through its grants program, by housing research staff and by welcoming postdoctoral researchers); it acquires, preserves and makes available to the University community an important collection of archives; it produces various publications, including two scholarly journals and a bimonthly newsletter; it organizes symposiums, exhibitions, lunch hour conferences (Les Rendez-vous du CRCCF), and other activities.

For consultation, researchers have access to almost 500 "fonds" and collections of archival documents, which make up nearly 1.6 linear kilometres of material: manuscripts, photographs, audio tapes, films, and other materials. These documents constitute important primary sources for research on French Canada and on the Franco-Ontarian community in particular. The centre welcomes many groups of students throughout the year to help them use these sources for their course work. A reference library is also on the premises, as well as online databases and various finding aids.

The association organizes social and cultural activities as well as coordinates its members' participation in university activities.

The association runs the Petit Café (ground floor of the arts building) and the Café Alternatif (basement of Simard Hall), where students like to go for a coffee.

Lockers are available in Simard Hall for Faculty of Arts students.

The Student's Association also offers scholarships.
