Faculty of Arts

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Students registered in the Faculty of Arts should familiarize themselves with the specific requirements of the degree which they seek and with Faculty and University regulations.

Students, by registering, agree to abide by these regulations.

Students are responsible for ensuring that the courses in which they have registered satisfy the program requirements of the degree sought. Students are responsible for any subsequent
change made to an initial course selection approved by the Faculty or the Registration Navigator.

The Faculty offers several undergraduate degree programs.

Detailed course requirements for each program are set out below.

Programs leading to the general baccalaureate in arts and the baccalaureate in arts with concentration require 90 credits and normally take three years to complete, except the baccalaureate in journalism.

Programs leading to the honours baccalaureate in arts, the bachelor of fine arts and the baccalaureate in music require 120 credits and normally take four years to complete.

BILINGUALISM AND BICULTURALISM

The policy on second languages at the University of Ottawa aims at fostering the development of bilingualism and encourages students to learn the official second language or enhance their knowledge of it. The University invites students to follow basic or enriched
second language courses offered by the Second Language Institute that are then credited to their program if completed successfully.

NOTE: A student whose mother tongue is not one of the two languages of instruction of the University of Ottawa (English or French) must take one of the language tests recognized by the University before admission, except when another proof of language competency can be provided. If make-up courses are required, the cost is borne by the student, not by the University.

General requirements for all Faculty programs
The Faculty requires students to successfully complete the following courses as part of every program in the Faculty, except the bachelor’s of music, the baccalaureate in journalism and the

Co-operative education option
A co-operative education program combines the usual academic training with study-related paid work in business, government or industry. In such a program, students alternate their study terms with four-month work terms after the first or second year of study
at the University.

There are nine co-op options in the Faculty of Arts:
communication, English, environmental studies, French, geography, history, lettres françaises, mathematics and translation.

Admission requirements
See the communication, English, environmental studies, French, geography, history, lettres françaises, mathematics and translation sections in this calendar and contact the departments concerned.

General requirements
See the Co-op Students’ Handbook.

Certificate in Advanced English and EFL
Pedagogy for Teachers from non-English speaking backgrounds

The requirements for this certificate are described in the second language section.

Bachelor of Fine Arts
The requirements for the bachelor of fine arts are described in the visual arts section.

Baccalaureate in Journalism
The requirements for the baccalaureate in journalism are described in the communication section.

Baccalaureate in Music
The requirements for the baccalaureate in music are described in the music section.

Baccalaureate with combined programs
Students registered in a concentration or honours program in the Faculty of Arts may, as part of their elective courses in their program of studies, fulfil the requirements of a concentration or of an honours in another discipline in arts; or they may fulfil the requirements of a concentration program in the Faculty of Social Sciences or of one specially offered by another Faculty as a second program of studies provided that they are admitted.

They must fulfil the requirements peculiar to each of these programs. However, certain courses may fulfil the requirements of the two programs. At the same time, they may be required to complete more than the minimum number of courses required for
two- or three-year programs.

The two programs completed will be indicated on the diploma.
For example:
• BA with concentration in history and concentration in Canadian studies;
• BA with concentration in linguistics and concentration in psychology;
• BA with honours in philosophy and concentration in mathematics;
• BA with honours in second language teaching and concentration in French as a second language.

In a case where two programs of the Faculty of Arts have been completed, two degrees will be conferred. Students must have the number of credits required for each of the baccalaureates and fulfil the requirements of the two honours programs. See also the
regulation on the granting of a second degree at the University of Ottawa.

The requirements of the programs of the Faculty of Social Sciences and of programs offered by other Faculties strictly as a second program which may be combined with a concentration or an honours program of the Faculty of Arts, are described under the heading “Combined Fields of Study”. Those of the programs of the Faculty of Arts are described in the section reserved for the departments and the interdisciplinary programs of the Faculty of
Arts.

Students registered for a BA with combined programs are exempted from the general requirement of 18 credits in one or more subjects other than those of the concentration or honours. In addition, the number of elective credits might decrease depending on the second program of studies chosen. At the same time, they might have to take more courses than may be required for a single honours or concentration program.

Joint Honours Baccalaureate programs
Joint Honours Baccalaureate programs offer students a sound theoretical and methodological training in two related or complementary disciplines. The programs guarantee integratedlearning progress in two disciplines for the entire four years of the baccalaureate, with the training acquired in one discipline serving to reinforce the knowledge in the other. Such programs also adequately prepare students for the workplace and the pursuit of
graduate studies.

Interdisciplinary programs
The Faculty of arts offers five interdisciplinary programs: Canadian studies, Environmental studies, Medieval studies, Second language teaching and Women’s studies.
